  • Jamaican football matches postponed over malaria fears

    from World Soccer News.

The Jamaica Football Federation has ordered all football matches on the Caribbean island to be postponed as a "precautionary measure" following a malaria outbreak.

"This is a precautionary measure taken against the background of the deadly malaria disease currently affecting sections of the island, which can be spread where there are large gatherings," the Federation said in a statement late Thursday.

"We hereby instruct that all football competitions be postponed until further notice," the statement added, citing the advice of the Federation's medical adviser.

Some 61 cases of malaria have been confirmed in Jamaica, following an outbreak of the mosquito-borne disease in isolated sections of the island's southeast, near the capital, Kingston.

Prior to the outbreak, Jamaica had been thought to be malaria free.
"Jamaica's future reflects its past, having attained only one per cent annual growth over 30 years whilst neighbours have grown at five per cent." (Article)
