  • Spain's Xavi may miss World Cup

Spain midfielder Xavi could miss the World Cup with a muscle injury.

The Barcelona star, 30, scored one goal and set up two in Saturday's 4-1 win at Villarreal but admitted afterwards that he has a 3cm tear above his calf.

"Xavi's playing with an injury that could see him miss the World Cup," said Barcelona boss Pep Guardiola.

Xavi, whose side are battling with Real Madrid for the Spanish title, added: "I'm carrying a number of aches but the team has a lot on the line."

Barca are four points clear at the top of La Liga but Real have four games remaining to the Catalans' three.

Xavi has contributed three goals and 13 assists in 32 league appearances for Barca, with whom he won the La Liga, Spanish Cup, Spanish Supercup, Champions League, Uefa Super Cup and Fifa Club World Cup titles last season.

He was also named player of the tournament after helping Spain win the 2008 European Championship.

Spain open their World Cup campaign against Switzerland on 16 June before also facing Honduras and Chile in Group H.

      Spain drop Senna, Guiza, Negredo

Convalescing duo Fernando Torres and Cesc Fabregas have both been included in Spain's final 23-man squad for the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™, along with uncapped trio Victor Valdes, Pedro Rodriguez and Javi Martinez.

The Liverpool striker Torres and Arsenal midfielder Fabregas are recovering from injuries that forced them to miss the end of the Premier League season, but will both nevertheless go to the global finals.

Valdes got the third goalkeeping spot behind Iker Casillas and Jose Reina, while his Barcelona team-mate, winger Pedro, was also included following a fine season with the Catalan giants.

Athletic Bilbao midfielder Martinez is the other newcomer in a squad that has many of the same faces that won UEFA EURO 2008.

Of Del Bosque's 30-man provisional squad for South Africa 2010, the men to miss out are goalkeepers Diego Lopez and David De Gea, defender Cesar Azpilicueta, midfielders Marcos Senna and Santi Cazorla, plus forwards Dani Guiza and Alvaro Negredo.

Spain have been drawn against Switzerland, Chile and Honduras in Group H.

      Spain squad

The combination of Sergi Busquets emergence and Senna struggling with injury this season I think made the coach decide to leave him out.

I was thinking the same thing too. However, Senna does have a better shot than Sergie. No one can complain with Senna being cut.
