The Editor, Sir:
Are we supposed to feel good because the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) got some money to pay off its self-inflicted bills? Is this some kind of a sick joke? Jamaica's football and the JFF have become nothing more than a 'push-around'. Any Tom, Dick or Harry can call and ask this federation to do anything.
It is because of bad management why the JFF finds itself in this dirt-cheap lifestyle. We need people in the JFF who are serious about football and not only about making money. Money can be made in football in a respectable manner if one has a good system in place.
Unfortunately, the JFF is being run like a political party. The People's National Party (PNP) stayed silent on the Trafigura scandal and the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) stayed silent on the United States law firm Manatt, Phelps & Phillips scandal. The PNP started a project and then lost the election to the JLP, and the JLP gave up on the project and vice versa. The former leader of the JFF started a project in western Jamaica and the new leader gave up on it, thereby wasting millions of dollars. The current leader is staying silent on the amount of money received from the South African Football Association, which leads to distrust.
Conflict of interest
It (the JFF) has put itself in a situation where it cannot disclose to the people of Jamaica the association's financial situation but at the same time wants the said people from whom its withholding information to donate money to its coffers.
Don't you think there is a conflict of interest if you have the leader of the JFF sponsoring most of the parish leagues in Jamaica? How can you bite the hands that are feeding you even though you don't like what's going on? Tom Tavares-Finson is a JLP senator who is the lawyer of a JLP supporter who is wanted in the US for alleged gun and drug crimes. Can anybody tell me the difference between these two examples I just outlined? There seems to be four political parties in Jamaica - the PNP, the JLP, the National Democratic Movement and JFF.
I am, etc.,
