BERLIN -- Germany goalkeeper Rene Adler will miss the World Cup because he has to undergo surgery on a rib injury.
Germany coach Joachim Loew says he was informed Tuesday that the 26-year-old Bayer Leverkusen goalkeeper won't be able to travel to South Africa.
Loew says "of course we are very sorry that Rene now has to undergo an operation and so is out of the World Cup."
Adler broke his rib last month. Loew is set to announce his 30-man World Cup squad on Thursday.
Earlier Tuesday, Leverkusen midfielder Simon Rolfes told Loew that he will miss the World Cup because of a knee injury.
Rolfes had an operation to remove damaged cartilage from his right knee in January and has not played since.
