While Reggae Boyz are away, the kids will play

Published: Monday | April 19, 2010 Though the Reggae Boyz, Jamaica's senior team, did not qualify for the FIFA World Cup finals, some of the island's youngsters will be on show at the premier football competition in South Africa in June.

The Jamaicans will be among 288 teens from 21 countries who will travel to South Africa to bear the flags of champion teams.

Jamaica will be sending 12 teens to perform flag-bearing duties and is the only country in the Caribbean participating in the Flag Bearer Programme. The programme is one part of Coca-Cola's partnership with FIFA for this year's World Cup.

The other flag-bearers will come from Mexico, Puerto Rico, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Brazil, Chile, Argentina, South Africa, Tunisia, Greece, Japan, Serbia, Italy, Poland, Germany, Denmark, Netherlands, France, Spain and England.

The Jamaican flag-bearers will perform their duties at two big-ticket football matches: Brazil vs Cte d'Ivoire and Italy vs Slovakia.
A participant from the Ministry of Education will assist in providing chaperone duties.

The all-expense paid trip to South Africa will include visas, travel, accommodation, food and trans-portation while in South Africa. The participants will also go on nature tours and museum visits.

In Jamaica, the 12 teens will be randomly selected from a pool of entries collected in a nationwide competition.

This campaign, which is localised in secondary schools, requires children aged 12-16 to complete an element of skill and write their entries on the back of the label of a Coca-Cola product and leave it in the drop box designated for entries.

The campaign will also be active in select supermarkets across the island.
