COPPERWOOD, St James -- Copperwood FC, contenders in the Claro-sponsored St James Division One football competition, have been plunged into mourning following the shooting death of their prolific goalscorer, 28-year-old Byron Clarke at his home Tuesday night.

Clarke, who was shot by unknown assailants, represented his team for the last time during the 0-0 draw against Juniors at Albion on Tuesday evening.

    CLARKE... late Copperwood FC player

According to relatives of the deceased, Clarke -- as was his custom -- was sitting on a stone outside his house speaking on his cellular phone when two gunmen opened fire, hitting him all over his body. He died on the spot.

Yesterday, blood stains painted the stone on which Clarke was seated at the time of the attack.

Distraught family members, who all sported blank looks, thronged the scene of the killing as they contemplated what could have led to the lethal attack, while the tears flowed down the cheeks of his grandmother Telladorna Richards.

Meanwhile, president of the St James Football Association George Evans yesterday condemned the killing as he offered condolences to family members and friends of the slain footballer.

"I'm really in shock to hear of the killing. I recall seeing Clarke during a game at Bickersteth earlier in the season and remembered that he played well.

"I'm absolutely shocked to hear. Naturally, the family of the St James Football Association are very saddened," Evans said.

Town has the highest murder rate(significantly more than Montego Bay) but seriously, you would have to do the research to know as Montego Bay is making a serious bid for becoming more infamous. We did not learn anything from Spain Town or Kingston, the question is where will be the next Montego Bay?

Condolences to the family and love ones.

And most of the other 461 victims of murder probably nuh receive a paragraph in the daily papers.
