Gary Neville has paid tribute to Nemanja Vidic for raising the bar in Manchester United's back four.
Vidic commanded a fee of £7 million, when signing from Spartak Moscow in January, and has really blossomed this season, as he hasgrown accustomed to the rigors of the Premiership.
United boast the meanest defencein the league this term, having conceded just nine goals from 17 games so far and the skipper insists a large part of that form has been down to their Serbian stopper.
"Nemanja has been nothing short of fantastic over the last two or three months,"Neville enthused.
"He has been an outstanding performer, a good old-fashioned defender who loves to head the ball and loves to tackle.
"He is infectious in the way he makes everybody around him want to defend in the same manner.
"It is great to have defenders like that who never take a backward step."
Unitedhavea healthy leadover champions Chelsea at the top of the table andNeville has reserved special praise for £30 million man Rio Ferdinand for theconsistencyhe has shown this season.
"Rio is very important to our back four and, for me, still the single most important member," Neville added.
"He offers that calmness and experience and positional sense. Nothing fazes him.
"He has an excellent partnership with Nemanja and we are blessed to have them because they complement each other so well.
"Last season, the manager said he wanted to create a solid foundation at the back. We are seeing more of that and we look like we are enjoying defending again."
United's defence will again need to hold firm as they look to see off West Ham United'schallenge at Upton Park on Sunday.
