Robert Bailey, Gleaner Writer The Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) has entered into an agreement with the Valencia FC Foundation in an effort to strengthen their footballing ties with the Spain La Liga club.
Details of the of agreement were announced yesterday by Pablo Mantilla, director of the Valencia FC Foundation - which owns the La Liga side - along with president of the JFF, Captain Horace Burrell, at the Spanish Court Hotel in Kingston.
Mantilla, who is in the island on a four-day visit, said he is looking forward to working with the JFF to help to develop the sport in Jamaica.
"This is the first time that Valencia is having a camp like this in the Americas and we have done camps in the United Kingdom," said Mantilla. "But why Jamaica?
"It was very easy because we felt the desire that Jamaica is the right place to have it and the response from our coaches and sponsors was great," Mantilla added.
Easter camp
Valencia's continued involvement with football in Jamaica will continue this weekend, with the staging of the Next Generation Pro Baller Easter football camp, which will run from March 28 to April 1, at Sabina Park in Kingston.
The camp will be staged under the guidance of three coaches from Valencia's football academy.
Burrell said the agreement will not only open doors for Jamaican footballers wishing to ply their trade in Spain, but it will also help the development of the sport in the country.
"The Jamaica Football Federation is just about to commence the construction of our training centre. In conversation with Mr Mantilla, he has agreed to assist with technical assistants and other possibilities and this is great news for us," said, Burrell.
Playing for Valencia
"We have also discussed the possibilities of at least one Jamaican playing for Valencia and those possibilities are now going to be real, in the same way as our players ply their trade in England," Burrell noted.
The JFF president added: "The fact that Valencia have a sound investment in Jamaica means that they will now be able to look at our talent to see if anyone is capable of playing football in Spain, which will be another market open for Jamaica."
Burrell said Mantilla and himself have also discussed the possibility of the Reggae Boyz opposing Spain in a friendly international in the near future.
The camp is the brainchild of Spain-born Victor Salazar-Chang, who has been residing in Jamaica for 20 years and owns Taino Trade and Investments Limited.
Valencia have won six La Liga titles, seven Copa Del Rey trophies, two Fairs Cups - which was the predecessor to the UEFA Cup - one UEFA Cup, one UEFA Cup Winners' Cup, two UEFA Super Cups and two Spanish Cups.

EUROPEAN-style football is among the world's most popular, while Spain is the top-ranked country. For one week in March, 100 Jamaican youngsters and 50 local coaches will get an opportunity to experience a little of both at the Next Generation Pro Baller Camp.
Five coaches from the Spain-based Valencia Football Club Foundation will conduct the camp at Sabina Park from March 28 to April 1.
Valencia is the third-ranked club in Spain's top flight La Liga, behind Barcelona and Real Madrid, and has claimed a slew of titles, including seven Copa Del Reys and the Spanish Super Cup, twice.
The camp will be aimed at players 12 to 18 years. Forty players will be selected from the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) programmes, 15 from the national female programme, 10 through a CLARO-sponsored islandwide event, and 35 from public high schools and clubs.
The coaches must be active in the target age group, be able to provide two references and will be chosen on a first come, first serve basis.
Former national player Andre Virtue will be the camp's technical director and will also help to choose the players who will benefit.
"I know the JFF and youth football on a whole will benefit from such a collaboration," Virtue told the Observer, adding that the aim is to identify and enhance the technique of local players with potential.
Three of those players will earn the chance to attend a club camp with Valencia from June 27 to July 3.
National coaches Dean Weatherly, Wendell Downswell, Patrick Walters and Leebert Halliman are the other evaluators.
Valencia-born Jamaican, Victor Salazar-Chang, was instrumental in organising the camp, which will run for the next three years.
"I thought it would be instructive to bring in some coaches from Valencia because our exposure to Spanish football is limited," he told the Observer.
Top Valencia players including David Villa and David Silva will be involved in league matches and Spain's FIFA World Cup effort during camp time, but Salazar-Chang hopes after the July event in South Africa they might be able to travel to Jamaica for further assistance.
"We're hoping after the World Cup some of the top players will come down and do some interactions with our future partners, the JFF, schools and sponsors," he said.
"You're going to see a lot of things from our side in the next three years," Salazar-Chang stated.

Real Madrid forging ties with Jamaica

Real Madrid, one of the world's richest and most successful football clubs, has expressed interest in forging ties with Jamaica, through the Spanish club's Social Integration Sports Academies programme. The programme, which is run by the Real Madrid Foundation

, has the aim of promoting sports and sports values, and improving the lives of underprivileged youngsters by providing access to social services.
Director General of the Real Madrid Foundation, Carlos Abella, told Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller, who toured the club's Madrid complex recently, that the academies model had been established in several Latin American countries to benefit more than 3,000 youngsters. He said that new academies were slated to start this year in Mexico and Uruguay.
He said that the academies go well beyond promoting sports as they provided opportunities for education, vocational training, psychological assistance and medical care.
Mrs. Simpson Miller commended the 10-year-old foundation on its social outreach initiatives, noting that they provided great opportunities for young people, especially those from humble beginnings.
The Prime Minister's visit to Real Madrid was part of her four-city European tour, which has already taken her to London for a meeting with the Jamaican community, and Brussels for a meeting with the African Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) Committee of Ambassadors, where she reaffirmed Jamaica's commitment to the ACP Group.
She also met with the Belgian Prime Minister, Guy Verhofstadt and President of the European Commission, José Manuel Barroso. In Spain, she met with current and prospective investors in Jamaica and received an enthusiastic response.

Are you suggesting that Real Madrid was not a Spanish club too?

The Real Madrid project is not dead! Both projects are real. How they eventually pan out? We'll have to wait and see!
