Manchester United lead race to land QPR wonderkid

Manchester United are at the head of the queue for QPR wonder boy Raheem Sterling - and desperate to beat all of their big-money rivals.
United's youth chief Brian McClair was a VIP guest at Sterling's under-18 game at the weekend as he made a final check on the kid who has been the talk of Rangers for a couple of months.
Attacking midfielder Sterling, still just 15, was pencilled in for a record-breaking first-team game when Jim Magilton was in charge - and has also dazzled for England's young sides.
Now McClair is targetting the whizz kid for an immediate move, beating off Manchester City, Arsenal and Fulham who all want him.

The big clubs were put off by QPR's valuation when he first hit the scene at the end of last year, but now United are back in ands hoping they can thrash out a proper fee with the club's new owners and rulers.
Sterling was born in Jamaica, but raised in London. He looks the best prospect for his age and United are keen to land a player who could be a household name for years to come.
United and City are battling bitterly for top young talent just now and are also in a tug-of-war for Nigerian midfielder Azeez Ramon who was named the best in his position at the recent FIFA under-17 world cup.

LIVERPOOL WIN RACE FOR SUPER STARLET

</IMG> STERLING: Signs for Liverpool for initial £500,000

Rangers kid Raheem Sterling signs for the Reds

    By Aidan Magee, 27/02/2010
LIVERPOOL have completed the £500,000 signing of QPR teenager Raheem Sterling.

The Reds beat off competition from Manchester United, Manchester City, Arsenal, Chelsea and Fulham to sign the striker, who only turned 15 in December.

Liverpool confirmed last night that they have made an initial down payment. The fee will rise, depending on appearances, to a figure believed to be £2million.

Sterling will join up with Liverpool's academy players this week. He has not played a first-team game for Rangers.

The England Under-16 international was a VIP guest at Anfield for Liverpool's win over Manchester United earlier this season. But he was also spoken to by Arsenal's academy director Liam Brady and watched by United's Brian McClair.

City were prepared to offer £1m plus two players to capture Sterling, who has been compared to Wayne Rooney and Theo Walcott at that age.

Fulham thought they had struck a £1.5m deal with QPR which would have spared Sterling the trouble of moving home. But Rangers were not keen to sell to their west London neighbours.
Former Rangers boss Jim Magilton was on the verge of giving Sterling his first team debut in December before he was sacked.

That's exactly my point Karl, under Rafa the young players dont really get a chance to come through,Liverpool have reached at least the semi-final of the FA youth cup every single year and instead of giving the youths a chance he goes and buy buy buy.Liverpool used to be the envy of all the English clubs what has happened to the generation of quality young players after Fowler,Gerrard,Owen and Caragher?

At 15 years old, Jamaica-born footballing prodigy Raheem Sterling is already capturing the British headlines, after recently penning a contract with European giants Liverpool amid interest from some of the top clubs in England.

Sterling, who grew up in the Queen's Park Rangers (QPR) youth system, drawing comparisons to the likes of international superstars Wayne Rooney and Theo Walcott, chose the Merseyside-based team over the likes of heavyweights Manchester United, Manchester City, Arsenal and Fulham.

The youngster, who recently made his debut for the England Under-16 team, was landed for a reported fee of £300,000, with QPR expected to receive further instalments if the one-time Maverley native breaks into the Liverpool first team.

His performances with the national team have done little to quell the hype around the winger, with several British publications hailing the speedy and skilful player as the next great English talent.

                Hopes to represent JA

However, Sterling is first and foremost a Jamaican, and despite the obvious temptation of playing for England, he has not turned his back on his country of birth and still harbours thoughts of one day donning the Jamaican colours.

Sterling's mother, Nadine, is extremely proud of her son's achievement and was clear about the colours in which she would like to see his international future unfold.

Said Nadine: "I'm a true-born Jamaican and I love Jamaica so much. I always tell him that I would love to see him represent and play in my colours, his colours. So, of course, I would love to see him play for Jamaica one day."

She added: "I'm very happy for him; what makes him happy makes me happy, and I know that this is something that he is extremely happy about. He loves football and we are talking about Liverpool here, so again, I'm very happy about everything."

The youngster will travel to the club today where he will finalise some paperwork with authorities, and has already been included in the club's plans later this month for some promotional activity in Vietnam.

"He (Sterling) is in very high spirits, he is very excited about this and he is looking forward to getting started," Nadine shared.

She added that the Liverpool choice was not a difficult one, and that the club made it even easier by quickly matching QPR's evaluation of the player, while other clubs showed a reluctance to fork out the sum.

"They (Liverpool) were the only club that were really willing to pay up the money that QPR wanted for him, so Liverpool were obviously keen on getting him and they showed that they were serious," Nadine stated.

Head of development for QPR, Steve Gallen, has heaped praise on the youngster: "(Sterling) has loads of natural ability. This boy can pass, shoot, head it, score goals, tackle, defend, anything."

Liverpool's Managing Director Christian Purslow has lauded his new signing, telling the British press: "We have made clear that we will invest in outstanding young talent. Raheem is a very exciting young English player whose progress was being closely monitored by many other leading clubs and I'm delighted he's joining us."

Raheem is coached by a good friend of mine Steve Gallen. He's and honest har working Irish background and is a family man. Faith to QPR. I've spoken to him about this young player who about 4 months ago was still committed to staying with QPR. Time will tell. His mother (Ithink a single parent) remains in the for front to help make quality decisions for her son along with the advice of QPR staff. I've known Steve fo over 10 years as he has worked for me in my footbal academies in the USA. He is looking out for the best interests of this lad. As for playing for Jamaica. There is a God who performs miracles for His greater glory and good. I'm not sure if He see Jamaica in the picture. Maybe if we all pray hard something might happen. Has anyone from the JFF contacted this boy? Qpr has not heard from them. It could be a great time to show some interest. Who would you play for if you had a bright Professional future. QPR is very much interested in the West Indian players and would love to see more Jamaicans, but the problem lay with ranking by FIFA and the not so solid development system of the youth player in Jamaica.

Well, I hope we don't waste every waking moment to try and get him to play for us. Instead, how about developing what we have here?!
