Real Madrid hit Villarreal for six, Celtic closed the gap on Rangers while Inter Milan were held for a third game on the trot.
Elsewhere, Montpellier failed to move level on points with the Ligue 1 leaders while the title races in Germany and Holland remain too close to call.
    Primera Division

Barcelona returned to winning ways as they put four goals past lowly Racing Santander. But Real Madrid kept within two points of the leaders after recording an emphatic 6-2 win over Villarreal on Sunday.
Elsewhere, third-placed Sevilla came from a goal down against Mallorca to notch a 3-1 success in a game that saw two players sent off, while Deportivo La Coruna saw off bottom-of-the-table Xerez, who look doomed for the drop.

    SPL

Celtic moved within seven points of pace-setters Rangers, whose game against St Johnstone was postponed due to a frozen pitch. The Hoops edged out Dundee United thanks to a solitary strike from Robbie Keane.
Hibernian suffered a third successive loss after they were beaten late on by Motherwell after being reduced to 10 men in the first half, Falkirk boosted their survival hopes while Hearts downed Hamilton on Sunday.

    Serie A

Inter Milan's third draw on the spin allowed Roma to close the gap on the leaders to five points. Inter, who meet Chelsea on Wednesday, could not find a way past Sampdoria as Jose Mourinho's men ended the game with nine men.
Mirko Vucinic's early strike was enough to see off Catania as Roma won their seventh game in a row, AC Milan were 2-0 victors at Bari while Juventus climbed to fourth thanks to a 2-1 success at Bologna.

    Ligue 1

Montpellier missed out on the chance to move level on points with leaders Bordeaux, who were victorious in French Cup action, after they were stunned 1-0 by St Etienne. Third-placed Lille were dramatic 2-1 winners at Rennes thanks to Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's late goal.
Elsewhere, Michel Bastos bagged a hat-trick in Lyon's 4-0 triumph over Sochaux while Mamadou Niang also scored a trio of goals as Marseille defeated Nancy 3-1 at Stade Velodrome.

    Bundesliga

The leading pair in Germany both drew meaning they remain on the same points total. Bayer Leverkusen, who sit top on goal difference, were denied three points at Werder Bremen by a 90th minute Per Mertesacker goal. Meanwhile, Bayern Munich played out a 1-1 stalemate at Nurnberg.
Third-positioned Schalke were shocked by Wolfsburg, who earned their first win in 11 attempts. Borussia Dortmund brushed aside Hannover while an incredible four-goal haul from Cacau helped Stuttgart beat Cologne.

    Eredivisie

FC Twente moved to within a point of table-toppers PSV Eindhoven after the latter were denied in the 90th minute against Sparta. Steve McClaren's men, meanwhile, claimed a narrow 1-0 win over Willem II.
Ajax were convincing 4-0 victors versus Vitesse but Feyenoord's poor form continued after they were rocked by a late goal from ADO Den Haag's Danny Buys, while VVV and AZ Alkmaar played out a six-goal thriller at De Koel.

    Best of the rest

Anderlecht continue to lead the way in Belgium's first division, Benfica opened up a one-point lead at the summit in Portugal, RB Salzburg remain the pace-setters in Austria, Greek giants Panathinaikos suffered a second straight loss while Turkish leaders Galatasaray drew.

Spanish press hail 'one-man orchestra' Cristiano Ronaldo after Real Madrid thrash Villarreal

Cristiano Ronaldo has been hailed as a one-man orchestra after his magnificent all-round performance in Real Madrid's 6-2 thrashing of Villarreal in La Liga on Sunday.

The Portuguese international opened the scoring with a trademark free-kick after 18 minutes and was in unstoppable form to help set up four more goals as Real trimmed the gap on leaders Barcelona to two points.
It was the perfect tonic for Manuel Pellegrini's side, after their 1-0 Champions League defeat at Lyon on Tuesday, and came a day after Ronaldo's native Madeira was struck by violent floods and mudslides that killed at least 42 people.

"It was an exhibition," Jose Samano wrote in daily El Pais under the headline: "Cristiano catches fire".
Ronaldo had been inspired either by "his competitive nature, which has driven him since childhood, or the tragic rainstorms over his native Madeira, or a desire to put the setback against Lyon right as quickly as possible," Samano added.
The world's most expensive player had been criticised at times for being selfish since his summer move from Manchester United, but it was his creativity and generosity, as well as his awesome talent, that caught the eye against Villarreal.
"The Madrid attack found a one-man orchestra, capable of expressing himself in all the offensive forays," Orfeo Suarez wrote in El Mundo.
"From his demonstration of power for the first goal, of speed and precision for the third, of intelligence in creating the opening for the fourth and of astuteness for the penalty in the sixth of the night," he added.
"This Madrid, the Madrid of Cristiano, is like a predator: if you give it any advantage it won't show mercy. It will kill you."
Writing in Publico, Ladislao Monino said Pellegrini's decision to deploy Ronaldo on the flanks had been key.
"Without doubt it was on the wing where Cristiano played his best match in white," Monino wrote.
"He returned to his origins. There on the flank, where the white line limits a winger's space, where the only escape is with a piece of exquisite skill or trick, Cristiano showed his most extreme version."
Ronaldo offered his help to the people of Madeira on Sunday - after scoring his goal he lifted his shirt to reveal a vest with the name of the island written across it - and Marca columnist Roberto Palomar noted that the 25-year-old was motivated by the floods on the Atlantic ocean resort.
"Spurred on emotionally by the tragedy in Madeira the lad deployed all of the repertoire we expect," Palomar wrote.
"One supposes that as well as shooting, taking freekicks, orchestrating moves and making passes, Cristiano Ronaldo is also the one who folds the shirts, cleans the boots and cuts the grass," he added.
"The only thing he doesn't do is sell tickets at the gate."

Watched the Inter game. 2 defenders got red card in the first half and all the opponents did was pass the ball ... kinda like Arsenal. Then late on one of their player got red carded before Eto'o had the opportunity to win the game late on ... only to be stopped by the keeper.

Well no use crying over spilled milk. As Fergie pointed out after the loss to Barca Ronaldo told him he wanted to go to Real Madrid. How long could they hold out? Personally I would have preferred if he stayed ... but.

Tevez choose to play for a smaller club where he would play less games so its not use talking about him.

Saha when fit was always good for MU, but he was injuried most of the times.

          Pique choose to go home.

What we need to do is work with what we have. I've seen on some MU blogs where people are ready to declare Chelsea the winner. The last time I checked they were leading by 4 points with 33 points up for grabs. The race is still on.

JOSE MOURINHO has been given a three-match ban and fined £35,000 following his handcuffs gesture during Saturday's match with Sampdoria.

Inter defenders Walter Samuel and Ivan Cordoba were both sent off during the goalless draw at the San Siro, prompting the ex-Chelsea boss to cross his arms.
Mourinhio's signal has been interpreted as his way of suggesting his side were being victimised by officials.
The gesture during the Serie A clash followed his jibe on Friday when he said: "I don't stick my head in the sand, I know there is only one team in Italy that has a penalty area 25 metres long."
There he was referring to a penalty awarded to Juventus when Alessandro Del Piero was fouled outside the area and his comments and behaviour have provoked anger among referees and club administrators.
The suspension refers to Serie A matches meaning he will be banned from the dugout for the games against Udinese, Genoa and Catania as Inter look to maintain their lead at the top of the table.
