Arsene Wenger is unhappy with Porto's winning goal
Referee Martin Hansson awards Porto's free-kick as Arsenal are left bemused
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger was unhappy with referee Martin Hansson after a Sol Campbell back-pass led to Porto's winning goal in the Champions League.
Lukasz Fabianski picked up Campbell's pass, only for Falcao to score from a quickly taken free-kick in the 2-1 win.
Wenger said: "It's difficult to swallow a defeat like that," after Campbell had cancelled out an own goal by Fabianski.
"The goals we conceded were difficult to imagine in a Champions League game. The back-pass was accidental."
It was a night of mixed emotions for the injury-hit Gunners in the first leg of their last-16 tie in Portugal.
Fabianski allowed Silvestre Varela's cross slip into the net after only 10 minutes, but Campbell soon hit back with a towering header to equalise and score his first Arsenal goal since the 2006 Champions League final.
The turning point of this lively encounter occurred seven minutes after the break when Campbell, 35, played the ball back to his keeper.
Fabianski, playing because of an injury to Manuel Almunia, needlessly handled the ball and after the referee awarded an indirect free-kick, the hosts were soon celebrating their vital strike as the Arsenal defenders protested.
The Swedish official was also the centre of controversy last November when he missed Thierry Henry's infamous handball in France's World Cup play-off win over the Republic of Ireland.
"What can you do about the second goal? Whenever do you see the defender kick the ball back with his toe? The ball hit Sol, it was not on purpose and it has to be intentional to be a free-kick," insisted Wenger.
"It is difficult to understand how the referee can interpret that. Then, on an indirect free-kick, if you allow the team to play quickly, just five metres from the goal, how can you defend that?
"It is better than a penalty. It was unbelievable that he allowed Porto to play straightaway and push the ball into the net. I have never seen that and I have been in the game a long time.
"When the referee gives the free-kick he has to allow us a chance to defend it, otherwise it is better to give a goal straight away. From a situation where there was no goal chance at all, and no free-kick as well, the referee gives them just a goal."
Wenger refused to blame Fabianski, who was also criticised for displays in their recent FA Cup defeat by Stoke.
"I do not want to come out individually on Lukasz's performance, and judge him in front of everybody," added the Frenchman.
"You have to accept you lose as a team and win as a team. Any individual performance has not to be analysed publicly."
Porto coach Jesualdo Ferreira had little complaints about the manner of the all-important strike.
"It was a legal goal, one born out of the intelligence of a Porto player," said Ferreira.
"Thierry Henry also did the same thing when he played for Arsenal. It gives a definite advantage to Porto now in the tie."
"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has."
Wenger needs to keep quiet and stop the whining with every loss. Porto won fairly! When Arsenal uses the quick restart to their advantage Wenger does not have a problem with it.

Shut it!
Agreed!!,if Wenger want to blame someone he should blame is players who were half asleep.
LOL this was amatuer hour to rhatid. Arsenal is completely worthless. Not only did the idiot keeper pick up the ball but then he handed to ball to the ref so that porto could take the quick restart. lol.
One day you guys will have to look in the mirror and admit to yourself that you need to buy REAL players who can play NOW and stop with the nonsense about projects for the future. Tomorrow never comes. - T.K.
This was similar to an incident with the RBz several years ago in a friendly with the USA. There was a foul about 10 yards outside the box, and while the defenders were asleep Donovan made a quick pass that resulted in a goal that tied the game 1-1. Hue made a long distance killa pass to Bennet who scored earlier in the match.
