DAY TWO AT 2006 NIKE FRIENDLIES CONCLUDES WITH A PAIR OF FEATURED MATCHES SET FOR SATURDAY

BRADENTON, Fla. (Dec. 8, 2006) – The 2006 Nike Friendlies enjoyed a second straight day of quality competition as the four day event moved to Friday at the IMG Academies in Bradenton, Fla. More than 50 club teams participated in their second match in as many days, putting it all on the line with Saturday’s rest day on the horizon. Now in its sixth year, the Nike Friendlies offer an environment that stresses high-level competition without emphasizing results and standings.
All five U.S. teams took to the field, with the U-18 Men’s National Team making their debut appearance after watching from the sidelines on Thursday as the other four U.S. teams compiled an impressive 2-0-2 record.
The oldest U.S. squad squared off vs. the U-17 ‘90s in an afternoon match featured on Field One, the most visible of the nine match fields. The crowd was treated to an entertaining matchup which, while lacking the finishing touch at either end of the field, still offered plenty of quality chances. After a tentative start for both teams, the U-17s had the first chance of the match in the 13th minute but Axel Levry’s shot from 20 yards rolled just wide. The U-18s’ best chance of the game came six minutes from time, when midfielder Anthony Wallace hit the post. Look for an all_access video coming soon with extended highlights of this match.
The U-17 ‘91s also played to a draw, coming away with a 1-1 tie vs. the U-17 Concorde Fire. The U.S. enjoyed a brief lead when Eddie Gonzalez scored the opening goal in the 66th minute, but Concorde fought back with an equalizer just three minutes later. With a 3-1 win vs. Arsenal on Thursday, the ’91s pushed their record to 1-0-1 through two days.
In the youngest age group, both of Jim Barlow’s U-15 Boy’s National Teams fell in their respective matches. The White team, which drew, 2-2, vs. Juventus on Day One, lost, 2-1, to FC Delco. The U.S. surrendered a goal in the 21st minute, but pulled even before halftime when Charles Renken converted an opportunity in the 28th minute. FC Delco would register the only goal of the second stanza, netting a 65th minute tally which proved to be the game-winner.
U-15 Blue got their crack at Italian side Juventus, looking to build on the momentum from the White team’s 2-2 draw a day earlier. The U.S. found themselves trailing, 2-0, at halftime but pulled a goal back shortly after the intermission when substitute Andrew Craven struck in the 51st minute. The USA’s comeback bid was dealt a fatal blow when Juventus restored their two-goal lead in the 59th minute. The Blue team couldn’t break through the rest of the way, falling 3-1, in the early afternoon.
The “Separated at Birth Moment of the Day” came from the Under-18 age group where Scott Gallagher took on the Atlanta Fire. The 2-1 win for the Fire was a mere sidenote, however, as a closer look at the box score revealed that both teams deployed a Tyler Williams. Even more astonishing - both Tylers scored for their respective teams.
On Saturday, the schedule has been reduced to just two matches at the U-18 level, as IMG Academy faces Weston Fury SC at 9 a.m., while an afternoon match pits the U.S. U-17 '90 vs. Brazil at 3 p.m. ussoccer.com is proud to offer a live webcast of the USA-Brazil game, a rematch of Thursday's 2-2 tie which saw the U.S. equalize in the game's final moments.
