Winning start for 2014: Mixed bag from Jamaica's Boyz

It was supposed to be a mismatch: out-of-competitive-shape Canada against motivated and more seasoned Jamaica eager to please at 'The Office'. Yet the of the Reggae Boyz reflected a mixed bag, despite their 1-0 win.

    Here's how they fared:
    GOALKEEPER:
Overall, Dwayne Miller did not have much to do. But a few moments offered an intriguing glimpse of what Donovan Ricketts' main challenger for the top will offer by the time the Boyz begin their qualifying campaign for World Cup 2014. Early in the match Miller was smartly off his line to punch away a dangerously swerving cross by Canada's Massih Wasseh.

Late, with Jamaica hanging on to a lead, he denied Ali Gerba's thunderous strike with a brilliant tip over the crossbar. But Miller bobbled a free kick hit straight at him in the first half in a crowded penalty area. That could have cost Jamaica and is not good enough at this level.

    GRADE B.

    DEFENCE:
Strange to see captain Tyrone Marshall operating on the flank, but this unit, with Shavar Thomas and Jermaine Taylor in the middle and Eric Vernan the other , was not exposed often, except for a few anxious moments against the badgering pace of Gerba and Stephen Ademolu, plus the busy Wasseh. Neither fullback offered much in attack, with Vernan being tested in the physical confrontations. He was later replaced by Kenardo Forbes. Thomas's error led to Miller's second-half save, but overall Canada struggled to penetrate.

    GRADE B+.

    MIDFIELD:
The most puzzling unit of all. Lacked coordination, spark, poise and imagination early.

Jason Morrison in the holding role is usually the picture of calm, but he appeared to lack urgency and inspiration.

Rodolph Austin and Demar Phillips put in a hard shift, but the quality of passing was lacking all round and the unit, at times, especially in the first half, appeared disjointed.

Omar Cummings, rotating between midfield and attack, showed loads of energy, especially against the tiring Canadians. But he too appeared a shade below sharpness, although his tenacity robbed Julian de Guzman of the ball and assisted on the game-winner. Credit him and Phillips with trying to get forward in attack, but Austin's long-range drive which flew high over the crossbar was one of the few shots at goal that came from midfield.

Substitutes Navion Boyd, Richard Edwards and Kaemmar Daley injected spark into the second half, but overall a disappointing show.

    GRADE C.

    FORWARDS:
The searing pace of Luton Shelton, especially, worried Canada all night. Devon Hodges shows promise but, like substitute Ryan Johnson, needs more games to truly stake a claim.

Again, Cummings operating just off them was busy all evening. But too few shots on goal for Jamaica, despite threatening throughout.

The finishing was sub-standard as well. Hodges' shot flew high from close in at a tight angle. Shelton, after speeding his way through a host of defenders, could only hit tamely to goalkeeper David Monslave from close in. But the striker's winner was a well taken powerhouse, which showed some confidence.

    GRADE C+.

    COACHING:
Theodore Whitmore always appears willing to try new things, which is good. But against Canada, he didn't have it just right early.

Marshall is always a more effective player in the middle of the park. And despite his relentless efforts, Austin's role needs more refinement. But overall, Jamaica came out in shape and aggression from the start.

The second half was better coordinated and sharper by the Boyz. Credit Whitmore for the adjustments. Yet questions remain. Why was the ageing Marshall, still a fine player but still in pre-season with his club, called to play a game described as part of a rebuilding campaign when young defenders like Dicoy Williams - who did not make the final squad - and Adrian Reid have done well recently and need experience?

    Puzzling.
    GRADE B.

    OVERALL:
A win is always good. To start the year positively makes it better. Jamaica will miss out on World Cup 2010 in South Africa, but last Sunday's performance offered flashes that the country has solid building blocks with which to make a big push for 2014 in Brazil.

THERE IS ONLY ONE ONANDI LOWE!

"Good things come out of the garrisons" after his daughter won the 100m Gold For Jamaica.

"It therefore is useless and pointless, unless it is for share malice and victimisation to arrest and charge a 92-year-old man for such a simple offence. There is nothing morally wrong with this man smoking a spliff; the only thing wrong is that it is still on the law books," said Chevannes.

    Whitmore pleased with display

    Whitmore
Theodore Whitmore was a pleased man following Jamaica's close 1-0 victory over Canada in their friendly inside the National Stadium last Sunday.

The former midfielder and current national had called for a strong from his charges leading up to the game as the locals looked to improve their dismal position on the FIFA world rankings.

Despite enjoying some of the better chances, that Jamaicans failed to really kill off the game and it took Luton Shelton's 68th minute strike to secure the win for the Jamaicans.

"It was three weeks of hard work and we certainly deserved the victory here. It was a spirited performance from both teams but we definitely deserved to come out on top" said Whitmore following the game. "The team did well, we should have scored some more goals because we got a number of chances but we have time to work on that. The goals will come in time, we just have to keep on it."

    poise and confidence

Whitmore reserved special praise for his batch of local-based players that were given a chance to prove their worth and stake a claim for a spot in the 2014 campaign roster with the likes of Rivoli's Devon Hodges, Tivoli's Navion Boyd and St Georges' Jermaine Taylor showing good poise and confidence throughout the encounter.

"It's the start of our 2014 campaign and we wanted to give some new players an opportunity. That is why we pulled out some of the more experienced players towards the end because we wanted to see how they (local players) would respond in the game. It's good that they are showing good signs, now they have to continue," Whitmore pointed out. "I have no doubt about the talent here in Jamaica. We wanted to look at a number of players but it's just a matter of time, everyone who deserves a chance will get it," he continued.

Shelton has high hopes for current squad

      Shelton
Despite getting the winning strike which saw him join Paul 'Tegat' Davis as Jamaica's all-time leading scorer with 28 goals, 24 year-old forward Luton Shelton was not overly pleased with his during Sunday's friendly against .
"It was not as good as I had hoped, I got a chance that I thought I should have scored when I dribbled past the four players, I tried to flick the ball back with the keeper advancing but it didn't work out well," said Shelton. "Apart from that I think I was a little bit complacent in the game but I tried to improve every time and I was screaming for another chance and I got it and I did score," he added.

Shelton who plays for Norwegian club, Valerenga Fotball believes that if the current group of players is kept together and allowed to gel, it will give Jamaica the best chance of moving forward.

      very impressed

"For the future I think it would be best if we keep a set of players together and just work with them and let them go out there and play every game and try to get to know each other."

The striker enjoyed his three weeks of training with the national team and was very impressed with the young players who formed part of the squad.
"They did really well in training," said Shelton. "We had to show them that we are doing the work so they can do the work as well," he added.

Shelton will, however, not be making the trip to Argentina for Jamaica's friendly against the giants next Wednesday as he has been summoned by his club for pre-season training. He left the island on Thursday to join up with his team, which is camping in . The Reggae Boy who stated that he is always happy playing for Jamaica hopes to score as many goals as possible in his upcoming club season as has his sights set on moving to a better and bigger club.

Manchester High schoolboy Jason Johnson is the only newcomer who will be travelling with Reggae Boyz 18-man squad today to face Argentina on Wednesday in an international friendly in Mar del Plata.

Midfielder Johnson, 19, was also a part of the training camp in preparation for last Sunday's Canada game, but was not selected in the final 20-man squad. But at the team's final training session at Winchester Park last night, the home of St George's College, the teenager's luck changed.

"We have most of our homegrown players added to the squad and we will be taking young Jason Johnson. He is the only one (schoolboy) included," said head coach Theodore Whitmore after a two-hour practice session.
Another promising player, Kenardo Forbes of Waterhouse -- who made his debut against Canada last Sunday -- was omitted. "We wanted to take Kenardo Forbes, but he had some visa issues," said Whitmore.

The team had a lively training session before departing for Argentina via Miami and coach Whitmore was pleased with what he saw. "I am very pleased with the training session. We are going to Argentina to give a good performance," said Jamaica's two-goal hero at the France 1998 World Cup Finals.

The last time Jamaica played Argentina was in that World Cup where the Reggae Boyz lost 0-5.

"Things and times have changed. Football have gone a far way and we are not thinking about the past, we are thinking about the future," said Whitmore.

"This is football, just imagine the first time we played Brazil, everyone was telling us that we are going to get six and with all of that it was a 0-0 draw. That is football," he added.

Top defender Shavar Thomas, Demar Stewart and striker Omar Cummings sat out training after nursing minor injuries, but should be ready for the match come Wednesday.

Squad -- Duwayne Kerr, Dwayne Miller, Ryan Johnson, Dane Richards, Rodolph Austin, Demar Stewart, Shavar Thomas, Omar Cummings, Navion Boyd, Keammar Daley, Jermaine Taylor, Dicoy Williams, Adrian Reid, Lovel Palmer, Richard Edwards, Devon Hodges, JeVaughn Watson, and Jason Johnson.
