SUNDERLAND target Salvador Cabanas is in a critical condition after he was shot in the head at a bar in Mexico.
The Paraguay striker, 29, is being treated in intensive care at a Mexico City hospital.
City attorney general Miguel Angel Mancera said: "We don't clearly know the motive behind the injury.
"According to an initial report it was a shot from a firearm with a frontal entry point and without exit.
"The player is conscious but he has a heart problem which they're trying to stabilise.
"We're waiting to see what those arrested have to say. It seems that the attack happened in the bathroom of the bar."
Cabanas is a prolific goalscorer for Mexican side Club America and was expected to feature in the World Cup in South Africa.
Team president Michel Bauer said: "He was a bit confused and didn't know what had happened and he was asking where they were taking him and why they were taking him there."
Cabanas' Paraguay team-mate Nelson Valdez said: "We can only pray.
"We are hurt, we give full support to the family of Salvador from here.
"Salvador is a great friend. We have a lot of conversations about who is better and more consistent.
"We can only wait now and we really hope that everything will go well."
Black Cats boss Steve Bruce had admitted his interest in the landing Cabanas earlier this month.
He said: "I've monitored Cabanas. He's a fantastic player and whether a deal is possible for him, I don't know.
"He's somebody who would be of interest to us but I'm sure if he became available, there would be a lot more clubs interested too."
