No worries as Girlz leave for earthquake-rocked Guatemala
Tuesday, January 19, 2010
Jamaica's Under-20 women footballers up to press time last night had their bags packed and were ready to depart for Guatemala for the CONCACAF finals, despite a strong earthquake which rocked the Central American country yesterday morning.
The quake -- which measured 6.0 on the Richter scale -- was also felt in neighbouring El Salvador, but there were no immediate reports of injuries or structural damage in either country, though officials were late yesterday still making checks.
President of the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF), Captain Horace Burrell -- who only yesterday returned from earthquake-ravaged Haiti -- said the tournament is expected to go ahead as scheduled.
"We have not been contacted by the organisers of the tournament, which means that there is nothing to suggest there is a concern," he said.
"I am not anticipating any disruption, unless there is cause for concern; and from where I sit it is obvious that there is nothing resulting from this quake that concerns the organisers," said Captain Burrell from his Kingston office yesterday.
