Birmingham in £8 million bid for Liverpool's Ryan Babel

Birmingham have made their first move in the January transfer window by offering Liverpool £8 million for the services of Ryan Babel.

The move for the Dutch winger is the first sign that Birmingham City owner Carson Yeung is serious about backing manager Alex McLeish with the finances needed to continue the club's run of impressive form this season.
Having won seven and drawn four in their last 11 fixtures, McLeish has made no secret of the club's intentions to go for a place in Europe, and a player of Babel's calibre is what his squad is lacking.

According to the Independent however, a deal is far from being completed as Liverpoolvalue the 23 year-old at £12m and in light of their financial woes the Merseyside club are likely to hold out for as much as possible.
With Charles N'Zogbia, Miguel Michel and Kevin Kuranyi also believed to be on Birmingham's wish list, McLeish has made no secret of the fact that come the end of the month the club hope to have made "a marquee signing".
"We won't rule out a marquee signing if there is someone out there who I think can make a huge difference to this team," he said. "We would try if we could but, again, there has got to be a cut-off point.
"I still don't think w have to spend £20m or £40m or whatever was quoted at the time. I don't think there's any point in bringing who are not as good as what we have - you don't progress doing that."

Want to stay up? They're currently 8th in the league and 1 point behind Liverpool.

Liverpool have turned down an £9million bid from Birmingham for Ryan Babel.

The Anfield club received the offer last night, but immediately insisted that the price falls well short of their valuation of around £12million for the Dutch international.

The Liverpool striker is keen to leave Liverpool, after making clear his frustration at a lack of first team opportunities since his arrival from Ajax two years ago.

But Benitez wants to recoup the £12million he paid for Babel, and the player himself is still keen to move to a club with Champions League prospects.

He has already turned down offers from Fiorentina and Beskitas, but is interested in a prospect move to Juventus, who have made recent enquiries.

I think he would probably do well at Chelsea.

RYAN BABEL has become a Liverpool pariah after getting involved in yet another bust-up with boss Rafa Benitez.

The Dutch international will be hit with a hefty £60,000 fine after going to war with the struggling Mersey giants for the FOURTH time in four months.
Babel, 23, has struggled to make an impact since arriving from Ajax in an £11.5million deal in July 2007.
He fears his lack of first-team chances could cost him a place in the Dutch World Cup squad this summer and has been desperately trying to get a move away.
But so far only Birmingham - with a £9m bid - and Sunderland, who were ready to swap striker Kenwyne Jones, have approached the Reds and Babel has flatly rejected both appro-aches.
The striker's latest flare-up came when he stormed out of the club's Melwood training ground yesterday following a disagreement with Benitez over Friday's Twitter revelations.
Babel had outraged the Reds manager by announcing to the world he had been left out of the squad to face Stoke the following day.
Yesterday, Benitez hauled the star into his office to demand an explanation and dish out a dressing down.
But the player hit back by accusing Benitez of ignoring calls from his agent, Winnie Haatrecht, to discuss a move.
Babel was told that was being handled by Liverpool's chief scout Eduardo Macia and that he should concentrate merely on playing and trying to get back into the team. It sparked an angry response from the forward, who took it to mean he was not wanted and raced away from Melwood.
He returned after half an hour, following a telephone call, and Benitez will now hit the Dutchman in the pocket with a fine of two weeks' wages.

                        var RStag = "";try{RStag = segQS;}catch(e){RStag = "";}document.write('');

The set-to is the most serious in a host of controversies surrounding Babel. He had to explain himself to Benitez after claiming in September the manager had broken promises to play him more.
In November he incurred the wrath of Benitez by revealing exclusively in The Sun he would be demanding a move in January.
Then came Friday's Twitter row and yesterday's rumpus.
Benitez has been trying to offload Babel so he can bring in much-needed attacking power. So far, despite constantly demanding a move, Babel has blocked any chance of that by quickly making it known he was not interested in moving to Wearside or Birmingham.
He would prefer a new start abroad with his former club Ajax, Bayern Munich, Fiorentina and Galatasaray in the running.

he needs to get away from Liverpool. He hasn't improved while there and in a World Cup year he can't afford to be out of a squad.

Another Rafa buy that did not work out.
