However, the Belgian outfit rejected the offer because they lacked the necessary time to arrange for a replacement.

Belgian press are restarting the rumor mill over the former Clemson University product's move to the Bernabeu. Onyewu's arrival to the Spanish capital could produce a back line of Roberto Carlos on the left, Fabio Cannavaro partnered with Onyewu in the center, and Sergio Ramos taking up position on the right with Cicinho still in dry dock.

The Brazilian right-back Cicinho has been in South America rehabbing his surgically repaired knee, but the Merengues have recalled Cicinho back to Spain to assess his progress -- the results of which could influence the club's moves in the January transfer market.

Onyewu, known affectionately as "Gooch" by American die-hards, has been a star defender in the Jupiler League since moving north from France. The 24-year-old was named in the Belgian league's starting eleven at the end of the 2005/06 season.

Transfer figures over any Real Madrid offer to Standard Liege vary from $5.25 million to $8 million.

Standard Liege boss Michel Preu'dhomme was quoted in Het Laaste Nieuws recently saying, "A transfer is now open to discussion." </DIV>

    COACH RESIGNED TO LOSING ONYEWU

Standard Liege head coach Michel Preud'homme has all but admitted defeat in his attempt to hang on to American defender Oguchi Onyewu when the transfer window opens in two weeks.

"I don't think he'll be here in January, but I hope he will be," Preud'homme bluntly told YA. "I think he will move."

"It's a pity for me, but that's life and we knew that before and we have to accept it."

Can he play there Zeppo? My gut is telling meno. I think he should hit one of the mid-table EPL teams. In the La Liga they give out penalty kicks and yellow cards like they are going out of style. Onyewu likes to foul players in the box and get yellow cards like it is going out of style. This could potential be a disastrous move for him. I can't fault anyone for wanting to play for Real Madrid but I hope he makes his way England. I think it would be a better fit. What are your thoughts? - T.K.

        RE: Real Madrid wants Onyewu

I think if Alexi Lalas could play in La Liga, Onyewu should be alright. I have to agree though that prior to the World Cup, I always maintained that Onyewu was a penalty just waiting to happen. It seems as if the referee was thinking the same thing when he rushed to judgment and gave Ghana that penalty when Onyewy really did nothing.

I think it would be good for him. Let him earn some bigger money and play against some better players than he is now facing in the Belgian leagues.

Man, when I think about it. Why did Kelly leave the Belgian league and return home again?

          RE: Real Madrid wants Onyewu

To tell you the truth, the interest from a team like Real has me a bit surprised.

I would be proud to see one of our players suiting up for such a big club. But part of me wonders if it would be too much too soon. Anyway, word has it that Capello is quite an admirer.

Tilla, a couple things. Lalas played in Italy's Serie A, not La Liga. And another big difference is that he played for Padova, a team whose main goal was simply to avoid relegation. The expectations for Onyewu at Real, should he end up there, would be much different.

But you are correct to state that the challenge would do him good. And the money wouldn't hurt, either!

Thanks for the correction. I guess I was mixing up my leagues. I think I am going to have to join Karl at the Shady Pines Retirement Home.
