Real Madrid edged out Valencia in Spain, Celtic and Rangers were both successful while the top three all failed to win in Serie A.
Bordeaux inflicted yet more misery on Lyon in France, Schalke closed in on the leaders in Germany while Steve McClaren continues to shine in Holland.
    Primera Division

Barcelona remain five points clear of Real Madrid after the duo both won their weekend matches. Barca were 1-0 victors versus neighbours Espanyol thanks to Zlatan Ibrahimovic's first-half penalty. Real, meanwhile, edged out Valencia 3-2 as Ezequiel Garay scored an 83rd minute winner.
Elsewhere, Sevilla climbed above Valencia after a Frederic Kanoute goal downed Sporting Gijon while Atletico Madrid slipped to 14th in the standings as a 90th minute strike from Joseba Llorente handed Villarreal success.

    SPL

Celtic had to rely on a 79th minute goal from substitute Marc-Antoine Fortune to ensure they secured a 3-2 victory over Motherwell at Fir Park. Their rivals Rangers remain hot on their heels after they cruised to a 3-0 win over St Johnstone.
Third-placed Hibernian were denied a success against lowly Kilmarnock while Hamilton recorded back-to-back successes as they downed Aberdeen 2-1 at Pittodrie.

    Serie A

Table-toppers Inter Milan stuttered in their clash versus Atalanta as Jose Mourinho's 10-man side were denied three points thanks to Simone Tiribocchi's late goal. AC Milan also fell to a shock result after Palermo stunned the San Siro with a 2-0 victory.
Elsewhere, the pressure continues to mount on Juventus manager Ciro Ferrara after his side were beaten 3-1 by Bari. Parma, meanwhile, closed on the top three with a late 2-1 success over Bologna.

    Ligue 1

Marouane Chamakh fired leaders Bordeaux to a massive 1-0 win over Lyon, who are now without a victory in their last five matches. Montpellier rose to second as they sealed a narrow three-point haul at Toulouse.
Lille notched a fourth straight success as they hammered Monaco 4-0, Marseille were comfortable 2-0 victors against Boulogne while Le Mans gave their survival hopes a shot in the arm.

    Bundesliga

Schalke moved to within one point of leaders Bayer Leverkusen after they capitalised on another draw by the latter. Leverkusen's clash with 10-man Hertha Berlin ended in dramatic circumstances as late goals ensured it finished 2-2.
A routine 2-0 win against high-flying Werder Bremen for Schalke was enough to see them close on the table-toppers. Bayern Munich continued their resurgence with a 5-1 thumping of VfL Bochum, there were eight goals at Borussia Monchengladbach while Jens Lehmann was sent off for Stuttgart.

    Eredivisie

FC Twente's outstanding run shows no signs of abating as they came from behind to beat NAC. That is now 12 wins on the bounce for McClaren's men. But PSV remain within two points of the leaders after Ola Toivonen bagged with four minutes left on the clock against AZ.
Ajax returned to winning ways with a 3-0 success over NEC, Feyenoord sit fourth after their 2-0 scalp of Heerenveen while Roda JC Kerkrade handed their hopes of avoiding relegation a major boost.

    Best of the rest

Anderlecht continued their march to a 30th Belgian First Division title, just one point separates Olympiakos and Panathinaikos in Greece, Benfica are top in Portugal on goal difference while Turkish leaders Kayserispor recorded a fifth successive win.
