Stephenson, Phillips guide Aalesund SK to Norway Cup

    Tuesday, November 10, 2009

Aalesund SK gained their first hold on the Norway Cup knockout competition following a 5-4 penalty shoot-out win over Molde SK at the National Stadium in Oslo on Sunday.

Jamaican internationals Khari Stephenson and Demar Phillips helped guide Aalesund SK to their win after the teams had played to 1-1 and 2-2 scorelines after regulation and extra times.

Aalesund SK went down to 10 players five minutes into the second half and had to come from behind twice before pulling off victory.

Stephenson, playing in central midfield, scored the first penalty for Aalesund SK, while Phillips, a 70th minute substitute, who played in left midfield, was on target later to deny Molde SK, the pre-game favourites after finishing runners-up in the league.

It was the first final in the knockout competition for Aalesund SK and they have now qualified for a play-off spot in the Uefa Europa Cup. The game was played before 25,000 spectators.
