  • Liverpool eyeing up Martin O'neill

MARTIN O'NEILL has emerged as the man to replace Rafa Benitez.

American owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett have identified O'Neill to succeed the Spaniard if Liverpool fail to qualify for next season's Champions League.

Hicks, Gillett, and managing director Christian Purslow are standing by beleaguered Benitez despite Liverpool's woeful recent run of form.

But behind the scenes the mood of staunch support for Benitez has shifted as Liverpool's season has lurched towards chaos, with six defeats, one draw and just one win in their last eight games.

The club are wary of making a knee-jerk reaction but recognise that unless results improve dramatically - and soon - they will have to consider replacing Benitez during the season rather than next summer.

Kenny Dalglish has been tipped to hold the Anfield fort if Benitez IS sacked before May but he would only be keeping the seat warm for O'Neill (left).

Wednesday's 1-1 draw with Lyon leaves Liverpool's Champions League campaign in a precarious position and five Premier League defeats already this season means their first title since 1990 is a pipedream.

Failing to qualify for the Champions League next season would have a huge effect on Liverpool's already shaky financial position.

The club's budget is based largely on Champions League qualification and an absence from the top four would badly damage any chances of Hicks and Gillett refinancing the club's debt.

That is why Benitez's position is now being discussed by the club's hierarchy and they have come to the conclusion that O'Neill is the best suited and best placed to take the club forward.

Twenty months ago, when things were wobbling under Benitez, the club flirted with the idea of recruiting Jurgen Klinsmann. But the initial interest came to nothing and despite having done a good job as German national manager at the 2006 World Cup, Klinsmann's lack of credentials at club level were exposed last season at Bayern Munich, where he was sacked in April. Since then Liverpool have flirted with the idea of luring Jose Mourinho back to England to take up the one job the 'Special One' has consistently said would lure him back to the Premier League.
    Frustrated

Given the current confused state of Liverpool's finances, however, it is unlikely the Inter Milan boss would want to take on the job at this stage of his career.

Certainly he would not be persuaded to leave Inter mid-season. And come next summer, it is more likely that he will be lured by Spanish giants Real Madrid.

O'Neill has always honoured his contracts at previous clubs but has become increasingly frustrated by how quickly the fans at Aston Villa have turned on him.

He took over at Villa in 2006 when the club was in turmoil following the reign of David O'Leary.

And he rapidly revived their fortunes and has led them into European football and even flirted with breaking in to the top four.

To most, O'Neill has done a fine job at re-establishing Villa as one of the country's top eight clubs. And so O'Neill can't understand why he can become so quickly subject to criticism from the stands.

He has worked well under the ownership of American Randy Lerner and the business model that has gone along with it.

O'Neill's ability to manage in that way has further impressed Yanks Hicks and Gillett, who have become increasingly wary of how quickly Benitez blames his inability to push Liverpool to the next level on a lack of transfer funds.

Last year, Benitez won a significant political battle when chief executive Rick Parry was ousted after the Spaniard had complained he should have total control of transfer business.

But it is understood that Gillett and Hicks are now sceptical of Benitez's ability in the transfer market - but have admired how well O'Neill has worked within budgets and in tandem with Villa owner Lerner's requirements.

Cannot happen ,Torrres leaves, masci, gerrard, kuyt, benayoun, lucas, carragher maybe babel might stay as he will get more playing time.

Leave Rafa, fi build the dynasty.
THERE IS ONLY ONE ONANDI LOWE!

"Good things come out of the garrisons" after his daughter won the 100m Gold For Jamaica.

"It therefore is useless and pointless, unless it is for share malice and victimisation to arrest and charge a 92-year-old man for such a simple offence. There is nothing morally wrong with this man smoking a spliff; the only thing wrong is that it is still on the law books," said Chevannes.

Ok lets sack Rafa , Bring in whomever , how long and how much will it cost for them to build a team ?

Do you think its going to be cheaper than keeping Rafa?

1st half the squad will put in a transfer request, Gerrad, Torres and Maschi without a doubt , then you have the ripple effect , struggling to be a mid table club.

2nd the new manager will have the same problems Rafa has , no funds and the task of building from scratch ?We will be a midtable club for the next 5 years with a revolving door of managers, Is that what you want , maybe you do , you arent a liverpool fan.

        3) When you do the cost and expense since Rafa arrival it totals $16 million a year on new players. The truth is Liverpool are a broke multimillion dollar club trying to keep up with billionares all the top 5 have a healthier financial picture than us, Chelsea, Man City , Man U , Arsenal and even Tottenham .

Yes fire him let him go.

To me Rafa is entitled to one bad season, and if he leaves he goes to Man City not Real , chuss mi pan dat.Rafa loves consistency.

A point that most overlook , its not that Liverpool have been playing badly or its becuase of lack of belief. Its all down to injuries , which exposes our lack of depth.

Lack of depth , with injuries to 5 starters , 2 key ones it must take a toll.Gerrard and Torres , Johnson and Riera , Skertel .

Sack Rafa and get whom ? anyone else would be a step back and a huge financial gamble for liverpool.

Blind faith bredren.Benitez haven't develop the squad in his 5 years, there is no excuse to be so dependent on 2 players.Boss the man has wasted millions of pounds on average players.Over the past 6 years Liverpool as reached at least the semi-final of the FA youth cup every single season, how many of those young players have come through to the first team?

              RAFA'S UPDATE ON INJURED SEVEN
              Steve Hunter 07 November 2009
Rafael Benitez is hoping to have seven of his injured stars available for selection against Birmingham City on Monday night.
The boss will make a late decision on whether to start inspirational skipper Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres and he could also be boosted by the availability of Glen Johnson, Martin Skrtel, Fabio Aurelio, Albert Riera and Nabil El Zhar.

Speaking exclusively to Liverpoolfc.tv, after Saturday morning's training session, Benitez said: "We have a lot of good news with players coming back from injury and they all took part in a light training session this morning.

"Steven trained on Friday with the physios and did a light training session today with the team and did well. He is improving and has more confidence.

"We will decide on Monday before the game if he can play. He hasn't been training for a long time so we have to be careful.

"With Fernando we know he has to keep working with the physios and we will see how he progresses. We will see how is he is because he still has some pain so we will decide if he can play on Monday.

"Johnson did a light session today and will train again on Sunday. If he is okay then hopefully he will be available to play against Birmingham.

"Martin Skrtel, Fabio Aurelio and Nabil El Zhar are doing well and were also involved in the training session so we will decide if they can play on Monday.

"Albert Riera also trained after his hamstring injury and that is good news for us.

"You can see we have had a lot of young players on the bench in recent weeks but we have more players back in training now. It's good for me and an option we didn't have available before."

Jamie Carragher will sit out this game as he serves a one-match ban for his sending-off against Fulham but Alberto Aquilani is in line for a first taste of the Anfield experience after he was an unused substitute in Lyon.

The Reds No.4 is unlikely to start against Alex McLeish's side but he is in the squad and the boss added: "His match fitness is still a problem.

"We are hopeful of having some players fit and available so maybe he can wait and change the game if it's necessary.

"We were controlling the game in Lyon and Lucas and Javier Mascherano were doing a very good job. When we scored we didn't want to change the shape. Aquilani was better after his virus and could have played some part but hopefully now he will be better for Monday."

I say to all the weak hearts look at Arsenal/Wegner.5 years no trophies and still building !

All me can say is if Oniel had half the resources Rafa had he would look like a genius.

Rafa had a few good player but he didn't get the best from too many he bought.

Rafa is the only manager that bought a flop? Fergie hasnt Veron ? Chelsea hasnt Schev ?

Wenger is an exceptional coach who can nurture talent , granted his club has the financial patience , I will give him that , so too is Benitez.

The difference is Benitez is underfunded and a lot more succesfull, Liverpool youth policy is starting to bear fruit, give him time like Arse and the league a guh bawl.Rafa takes his time to blood talent .Arse throws them in.
