CARSON, Calif. (– The LA Galaxy announced their annual team awards following tonight’s 2-0 win over the San Jose Earthquakes at The Home Depot Center. Galaxy captain Landon Donovan won two awards on the evening, while defender Todd Dunivant and goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts each won one.

For the second straight season and the third time in his Galaxy career, Donovan was named the Galaxy’s Most Valuable Player while also winning the Budweiser Golden Boot as the club’s top scorer for the fifth straight season. Ricketts, the Galaxy’s Jamaican international goalkeeper narrowly edged out Omar Gonzalez to win the club’s Defender of the Year award in his first season with the club while Dunivant was named the Galaxy’s U.S. Soccer Foundation/MLS W.O.R.K.S. Humanitarian of the Year.

Donovan led the team with 12 goals and tied for the club lead with six assists and is also frontrunner for the 2009 MLS MVP award after leading the club back to the post season for the first time since 2005. It is the fifth time he has won the club’s Golden Boot Award.

Ricketts is the third consecutive newcomer to be named the club’s Defender of the Year. He, tallied a 1.03 goals against average to go along with 10 wins and nine clean sheets, including three straight to close out the season. Ricketts was a big reason why the Galaxy had one of the best defenses in MLS in 2009, just one year removed from a league-worst 62 goals allowed in 2008. He helped the Galaxy set a team record with 12 clean sheets on the season and helped the club allow 31 fewer goals than they did in the previous season, setting an MLS record for the biggest single season improvement in a club’s defense. The 31 goals allowed by the Galaxy are exactly half the number which the club allowed just one season ago, thanks in large to the play of Ricketts.

Dunivant has been very active in the Galaxy Foundation’s community endeavors and participated in a Bone Marrow Donor Drive in an effort to support Marcia Williams, the wife of Real Salt Lake midfielder Andy Williams, who has been diagnosed with a rare form of leukemia. He also took part in the Easter Egg Hunt for underserved children and their families, and was a spokesman for the Galaxy’s Summer Santa program. Dunivant also took part in a number of events held by the Galaxy Foundation, including How Suite It Is!, which raises funds for the Foundation’s philanthropic endeavors and the Foundation’s Eighth Annual Day on the Links Golf Tournament.
