With £30m Rio Ferdinand's future in the heart of the defence looking precarious, as his back injury has restricted him to one appearance every three games of late, what would United give for a ready-made replacement in 22-year-old Pique?
The Spain centre-half is negotiating a new contract after just one season at Barcelona which will elevate him up among the top earners, putting him on a £60,000-a-week deal with a £45m buy-out clause.
Barcelona are keen to ensure that he does not slip through the net, as he did at Old Trafford at a time when Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic seemed immovable.
