BAYERN COACH WANTS WIN FOR OKTOBERFEST
MUNICH (AP) - Bayern Munich's new coach Louis van Gaal wants his team to remain unbeaten during the city's beer bash known as the Oktoberfest.
The annual beer-guzzling festival opens Saturday, the day Bayern hosts Nuremberg, the promoted Bavarian rival.
Note: Bayern beat Nuremberg 2-1
Until Oct. 4, when the Oktoberfest ends, Bayern has five games, including a Champions League group game against Juventus.
"We have a difficult schedule, but we have to make sure we remain unbeaten during the Oktoberfest," Van Gaal said Friday.
That means the players won't be allowed to celebrate at the Oktoberfest if they beat Nuremberg - although the team traditionally pays a visit to one of the beer tents during the festival.
"We have three games inside a week. Recovery and rest are very important for a football professional," said Van Gaal, who conceded he was not a "beer drinker."
After a stuttering start, Bayern has won its last three games with a 11-1 goal aggregate, including a 3-0 Champions League win over Maccabi Haifa.
"The results will be okay only if we beat Nuremberg, Rot-Weiss Oberhausen in the German Cup and then finish the week with a win at Hamburger SV," the Dutch coach said.
Bayern has eight points after five games, five behind leaders Hamburger SV and Bayer Leverkusen.
Van Gaal said he expected a tough match against a "well-organized Nuremberg with a lot of fighting spirit and the will to run."
Nuremberg coach Michael Oenning said his team was not afraid of the trip to Munich.
"We are not going to Munich to be humiliated," Oenning said.
