Sir Alex set to face up to one of his toughest decision in years
The Premier League's decision enforce a squad quota of 25 players, has brought mixed opinions. Obviously this has been designed as a way of trying to make the League more competitive, even out some football clubs and the only clubs who are probably welcoming it are the lesser likes, as this quota seems to fully impede the bigger clubs.
My view of the quota is quite positive. Let's be honest Manchester United are not going to have any problems fulfilling the criteria, especially the home grown quota, something that cannot be said of Liverpool, but the one pressing issue is that Ferguson may be forced into a corner with our senior players at the football club and what to do with them. The likes of Giggs, Scholes and Neville are no spring chickens and with the squad limit at 25 for players, can he afford to register all three for the domestic season? Fergie came out today and was extremely positive about Scholes' performance this season and how he may offer him new deal, while Giggs is just Giggs and who continues to defy everyone year on year; however his captain Gary Neville is a different kettle of fish altogether and with his injury record of the past two years, it makes you wonder whether Fergie would take the risk with him, especially given the likes of Rafael, and Wes Brown are more than able to take on that role.
It is an extremely tough call for Ferguson to make and although I would expect both Giggs and Scholes to make the PL cut, providing they both remain injury free, I just believe that Gary Neville will have his work cut out to do so, unless he can remain fit for at least 70% of games this season. There is no question that a fit Gary Neville is a massive asset for United and his experience is invaluable, but unfortunately that is something we haven't been able to rely upon for a few years.
