From Fox Soccer:
SAN JOSE, Costa Rica (AP) - Rene Simoes, the new coach of Costa Rica, already has problems less than a day after being put in charge.
The Brazilian said he hoped to get the team together two weeks before its final group qualifying games - on Oct. 10 at home against Trinidad and Tobago and on Oct. 14 in Washington D.C. against the United States.
On Thursday, directors of two clubs - Saprissa and Cartagines - said they would not cede their players for two weeks to the national team.
"This was negotiated beforehand with first-division teams," Costa Rica federation president Eduardo Li told reporters.
Simoes was named on Wednesday, a day after Rodrigo Kenton was fired for three straight losses in qualifying.
Costa Rica, which once led the North and Central American and Caribbean region, is fourth with 12 points following losses to Honduras, Mexico and El Salvador.
The United States leads North and Central American and Caribbean qualifying with 16 points, one ahead of Mexico and three in front of Honduras.
The top three teams qualify automatically and the No. 4 faces a playoff with the fifth-place team in South America. The fifth-place team in South America is presently Argentina.
Costa Rica is trying to reach its third straight World Cup.
