NEW YORK -- FC Dallas forward Jeff Cunningham was voted Major League Soccer's Player of the Week for Week 26 of the 2009 season. Cunningham scored two goals and added two assists in FC Dallas' 6-3 win over the Los Angeles Galaxy at The Home Depot Center on Saturday, Sept. 12.

When it rains, it pours for Cunningham, as he led FC Dallas to one of their biggest victories of the season on Saturday. FC Dallas tied the mark for most goals scored by the club this year, six, with two coming from Cunningham. They defeated the Wizards 6-0 on Aug. 1, when Cunningham netted four goals. The 12-year veteran now ranks second in the Budweiser Golden Boot race with 12 goals this season, one behind leader Conor Casey (13) and one ahead of third-place Fredy Montero (11).

The Galaxy, sitting in second place in the Western Conference, were
stunned by the onslaught of goals from their Western Conference foe. Cunningham scored goals in the 25th and 86th minutes and added assists on a Dax McCarty goal and David Ferreira goal. He was a thorn in the side of Galaxy defenders the entire night.

FC Dallas sit in seventh place in the Western Conference, but the victory kept them on the bubble for a playoff berth and improved their record to 7-11-6 with 27 points.

Cunningham's two goals propelled him past Ante Razov for sole possession of second place on the MLS all-time goal scorers list. He now has 116 career goals, two ahead of Razov and 13 behind the League's all-time leader Jaime Moreno (129). Cunningham has three multi-goal games this season and ranks third all-time with 19 career multi-goal games. Only Razov (22) and Landon Donovan (21) have more.

Cunningham has won three MLS Player of the Week awards in 2009, and has captured the honor 12 times during his career, which is an MLS record. Cunningham beat out Toronto FC's Dwayne De Rosario for the honor in Week 26. De Rosario had a goal and an assist in Toronto's 3-2 win over Colorado. Cunningham and FC Dallas are back in action against the Kansas City Wizards on Saturday, Sept. 19 at CommunityAmerica Ball Park at 8:30 p.m. ET.

The Major League Soccer Player of the Week is selected each week of the MLS regular season by a panel of journalists from The North American Soccer Reporters (NASR). The group consists of members of print, television, radio and online media. More information and membership information can be found at www.soccerreporters.com.

pity it came at ricketts' expense.

In a way yes but really the entire Galaxy team was exposed during this game. I think this match shows why Bruce Arena goes with a defense first attitude with his squad. They lack pace everywhere on the field outside of Donovan and Jordan. The backline in front of Ricketts has to be the slowest in the league. Can't really fault Ricketts for this game. This is one of those matches that as a group you simply move on from as it is the exception for the group rather than the norm. - T.K.
