Maradona stares into World Cup abyss

Argentina coach Diego Maradona was accused of making fatal errors in selection and tactics on Thursday as the soccer-mad country contemplated the humiliating prospect of missing out on the World Cup.

Wednesday's 1-0 defeat to Paraguay sent the former double champions slipping out of the four automatic qualifying places for the 2010 finals in South Africa with just two games in the South American zone left to play.

It was the fourth defeat in six qualifiers since Maradona took the reins.

"Donovan was excellent. We knew he was a good player, but he really didn't do anything wrong in the whole game and made it difficult for us."

Four losses in Six says it all - he should resign or coach Tevez to hands the ball into the goal.

Yet another loss leaves Argentines mad at Maradona

Argentines are furious. They’re blaming their soccer team’s most recent World Cup qualifying loss squarely on coach Diego Maradona. Now the two-time world champions are in danger of missing their first World Cup since 1970.

"This Maradona has shown dramatically that he wasn’t born to coach, that his glorious image was useful at first, but no more," the Diario Popular newspaper wrote in Thursday’s editions.

The sports daily Ole wrote: "We’re going nowhere" over a picture of Maradona.

            Dunga shows way to Maradona

Dunga and Diego Maradona - two World Cup winners as players, who are going through contrasting fortunes as novice coaches.

Dunga has steered Brazil through to World Cup qualification with matches in hand, and has picked up the Copa America and the Confederations Cup along the way. Maradona, meanwhile, is sitting in the hot seat with his Argentina in danger of missing out on the World Cup for the first time since 1970.

So why has one of them taken so easily to coaching and the other is floundering?

Reports: Guardiola sought to replace Maradona in Argentina

A group made up of presidents of football clubs from Argentina's Primera Division are heading a campaign to have Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola installed as Argentina coach in place of under fire Diego Maradona, according to reports in the Spanish press.

The "Project Guardiola 2010" see the Barca chief as the ideal man to lead the Albicelestes, as he has the know-how to get the best out of Lionel Messi.

"Argentina has a diamond in the rough, it is Messi, and none of the national experts have been able to get the best out of him," Spanish daily Marca quotes the group as saying. "In contrast with Guardiola at Barcelona, Messi won three tournaments in a year."

                Police seize Maradona's earrings

Italian police have seized earrings from Argentina's football coach Diego Maradona in an effort to recover unpaid taxes from his playing days at Napoli.

Maradona handed over the earrings, worth some 4,000 euros (£3,600), at a health clinic in northern Italy.

Italian news agency Ansa said Maradona faced a bill of 37m euros from his time at Napoli, where he played a starring role between 1984 and 1991.
