Pekerman, Not Klinsmann, In Line For USA Job? Contrary to popular belief that U.S. Soccer and Jurgen Klinsmann simply have been spending the past couple weeks dotting some I's and crossing some T's, Argentina's World Cup coach Jose Pekerman is poised to take America's reigns for the next World Cup cycle.

Current Colorado Rapids manager and former Uruguayan-born U.S. international Fernando Clavijo would be brought on as Pekerman's top assistant.

An announcement is expected before the end of the month, possibly next weekend during the CONCACAF Women's Gold Cup. The Gold Cup final is Saturday, November 26.

Pekerman, 57, guided a rejuvenated Argentine squad to the quarterfinals of the World Cup. However, many felt Pekerman's youthful side fell short of expectations, chiefly due to some questionable substitutions during the quarterfinal match, which Argetina led before losing on penalty kicks to Germany. Pekerman resigned after the World Cup, having first taken the reigns in 2004.

The Argentinean tactician is world famous for his success at youth level, having guided Argentina to three U-20 FIFA World Youth Championships (1995, 1997, 2001).

Jurgen Klinsmann had been tipped for the U.S. job, but that may have fallen apart for any of a number of speculative reasons. The first may have had to do with salary, Klinsmann's demands reportedly too high for U.S. Soccer. Next, some sources indicated Klinsmann wanted full control over the U.S. youth set-up, as well as wanted his top assistant to lead the senior U.S. team until 2008. Finally, Klinsmann's association with adidas has been rumored as another stumbling block. U.S. Soccer has close ties with Oregon-based Nike.

Regardless of all the speculation, a decision over the next U.S. coach is expected shortly, with a February friendly in the works against Mexico, which just named the legendary Hugo Sanchez as coach.

RE: Pekerman, Not Klinsmann, In Line For USA Job?

To be honest no one has a clue which way Gulati is going. Last week on American Soccer it was reported that he denied the Pekerman thing whole heartedly. The announcers still believed that it was Klinsmann's for the taking. - T.K.
