  • Transfer budget leave cheque book manager suicidal!!

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez has reportedly been left 'devastated' after being informed by the club's owners that he will be given just £2m - or less - to spend in the final weeks of the transfer window.

Concerned about the lack of options he has in defence, with Daniel Agger still troubled by his ongoing back problem and Martin Skrtel a doubt for tomorrow's clash with Stoke, Benitez is understood to be determined to acquire new defensive cover before the window closes.

However, according to The Times, he will have 'no more than £2 million' to spend, 'despite having recouped at least as much as he has spent in the transfer market this summer'.

The Daily Mirror claims that the exact amount at Benitez's disposal may be as little as £1.5m, although neither sum will probably be sufficient for the Spaniard to buy. The Liverpool boss will instead have to scour the bargain basement in the hope of landing a player either on a free transfer or on loan.

The Mirror says that, 'His first choice was Ryan Shawcross, but Stoke have laughed off the suggestion that they would let a defender important to them go out on loan for an entire Premier League season.

'He has also enquired about taking the Portsmouth defender Sylvain Distin on loan, but was again met with near incredulity by the South coast club.

'What will have angered Benitez most is that he was in a position to sign the Spain international winger David Silva from Valencia, but then had to pull out of the deal because he didn't have the money to meet the £17million asking price.'

Despite spending approximately £37m on Glen Johnson and Alberto Aquilani this summer, Benitez has more than recouped that amount through the sales of Xabi Alonso, Sebastian Leto, Alvaro Arbeloa, Paul Anderson and Jack Hobbs. He also offloaded Robbie Keane for £12m in February.

In explanation for why Benitez's transfer kitty is now reputedly all-but empty, The Times suggests that 'The Liverpool owners argue that the club must be run as a business and made it clear that pay increases handed out to Fernando Torres, Steven Gerrard, Dirk Kuyt, Yossi Benayoun and Agger would be subtracted from the money made available to Benítez'.

Stoke close in on Collins capture

James Collins has won 30 international caps for Wales

Stoke City are closing in on the signing of Welsh international defender James Collins from West Ham United. BBC Sport understands the 25-year-old centre-back is at the Britannia Stadium discussing personal terms after the two clubs agreed an initial £3.5m fee.
His fellow West Ham defender Matthew Upson has also been the subject of intense speculation this summer.
Collins, who has 30 Welsh caps, has played 63 times for the Hammers since his move from Cardiff City in 2005.
West Ham boss Gianfranco Zola insisted his club did not need to sell key players before the end of the August transfer window.
Zola was thought to be under pressure from CB Holding, the club's Icelandic owners, to cash in on the squad.
But Zola told the club's website on Tuesday: "We are looking to buy not sell players."
Pulis has long been an admirer of fellow Welshman Collins, and with uncertainty surrounding the future of Stoke defender Ryan Shawcross, who has been linked with moves to Liverpool and Manchester United, he is keen to add another defender to his squad.

Hammers fan here... If Stoke do get Collins I would be gutted as he is great player and he is only 25

Pulis conceded Collins is "one of many targets", but he told BBC Radio Stoke: "If we're doing any business, we'll do it with the clubs and not through the media."
Collins could complete his move in time for Wednesday's Premier League game at Liverpool but he is likely to start as a third-choice centre-back behind captain Abdoulaye Faye and Shawcross.
The fee could eventually rise to £5m based on the number of appearances he makes for the Potters.
Collins' injury problems have limited him to just 49 league starts for the Hammers but he played the full 90 minutes as Gianfranco Zola's side won their opening Premier League of the season 2-0 against promoted Wolves at Molineux.
Pulis, though, insists he will not let Shawcross leave the Britannia Stadium.
"Ryan's done fantastically well for us and we want to keep him at Stoke City," added Pulis.
"He's one of the younger players that we've got in the group and he's a big asset to us.
"This club is looking to push on and you don't do that by selling your best players."

Now I know you going to claim that he was "developed" by Slurgie, but don't even start with that argument. He is a talent, nice goal on the weekend and would be a great asset to Liverpool. NOW YOU AND ME KNOW THAT THE E-VILE ONE TRYIN' TO DERAIL DAT!! What a wicked man him is.
