    Donovan has H1N1 flu virus

U.S. soccer star Landon Donovan has tested positive for the H1N1 flu virus, Donovan told SI.com on Thursday night.

"I felt something when I got into Miami on Sunday," Donovan said. "I just felt real bad and finally went to see the doctor. They took a swab from my nose and confirmed it, so that was that."

Donovan learned of the H1N1 diagnosis on Thursday afternoon, the day after he played 90 minutes in the U.S.'s 2-1 World Cup qualifying loss to Mexico in Mexico City. Even though Mexico has been the epicenter of the global H1N1 outbreak, Donovan said that he contracted the virus in the United States.

"Donovan was excellent. We knew he was a good player, but he really didn't do anything wrong in the whole game and made it difficult for us."

Donovan healthy again after swine flu

U.S. forward Landon Donovan has had nearly a month to recover from swine flu and needed more of that time than he expected.

Donovan played through the illness on Aug. 12 in a World Cup qualifier against Mexico, surviving all 90 minutes in the altitude of Mexico City. He knew he was sick - and exhausted after the 2-1 loss to Mexico - but didn’t learn the diagnosis until a couple of days later.

The United States returns to qualifying with two games in the next week, starting with El Salvador on Saturday at Rio Tinto Stadium south of Salt Lake City.

wasn't he contagious then and couldn't that have placed all the pother players at risk? i genuinely don't know that is why i am asking.

From what I understand he didn't know he had it until just after the U.S. vs. Mexico game at the Azteca. And apparently he had a rather mild strain of it and when he was with the squad he was already past the stage where he could infect other people.

However several of his teammates on the squad were isolated for a few days as a precautionary move by their club teams when they went back to Europe. Cherundolo was one of them, and they even ended up isolating one of his German teammates who had gone out to dinner with him when he got back.
