FIFA Task force proposes Tuesday internationals, insurance system for players
ZURICH, Switzerland (AP) - A FIFA task force on Friday proposed moving midweek internationals to Tuesdays and the creation of an insurance system to cover clubs when players are with their countries.
The task force - comprised of club presidents, coaches, league officials and players - wants to shift the midweek internationals from Wednesdays to allow teams more time to prepare for weekend games.
FIFA Congress will vote on the proposals at its annual meeting in May.
World soccer's governing body established an insurance system for the 2006 World Cup. But the task force -under FC Barcelona president Joan Laporta - proposed a "player insurance for international call-ups" that would include friendlies, qualifying matches and other national team competitions.
