Several players from many-time local champions Portmore United may be on the verge of signing for Scandinavian teams after impressing on the team's pre-season tour of Norway.
The team is scheduled to return to the island on Friday after games against First Division outfit IL-Trysil (won 3-1) and Norwegian Premier League team Lillestrøm SK (lost 0-1).
The St Catherine-based Jamaican team was scheduled to play their final game yesterday against Lyn FK on the tour that was organised to offer exposure to the players and allow them to showcase their abilities to scouts in the area.
General manager Trevin Nairne confirmed that several players have generated strong interest from a number of teams, but stressed that discussions are currently in the early stages.
Said Nairne: "Interest (were) shown on several players but we're not sure how serious it is; nothing has been signed, we just started talking to the people.
"The interest is there but at this time it's difficult to say how serious it is, but we're working assiduously to provide an opportunity for our players.
"This is a chance for them to develop themselves and also for Portmore United and by extension Jamaica's football to grow," he added.
Nairne is also expecting the club to be in a better position after the tour ends, especially considering that a lot more scouts were invited to yesterday's final game.
"We have to see exactly how serious these enquires are. The tour ends on Friday so we'll be able to speak more on the whole situation after the final game. we'll have much more scouts at this final game so we'll see if any of this interest actually materialises," he said.
Nairne, who joined the ranks of the local powerhouses earlier this year, emphasised that the club recognises that Jamaican players have adopted well to the environment in Scandinavian countries and went on to share that there has been a lot of positive feedback coming out of the tour from all concerned.
"We recognise that a lot of Jamaican players fit in rather easily in the Scandinavian environment. It's a nice market for local players; the clubs there appreciate the aggressive and skilful nature of Jamaican players and so we're pleased to give them this opportunity," Nairne said.
"Feedback has been really good; the training is going on well; the team is building and we should have a very strong unit come September. We have some young players on the tour that are gaining a lot of experience and this is always a good thing," he added.
Portmore United remain in constant contact with several clubs from the region after earlier this year completed a £1-million signing of national midfielder Rudolph Austin to Norwegian Premier League club, SK Brann.
