Barnsley boss Simon Davey is in negotiation with three players in an attempt to bolster his midfield. The Reds have had bids accepted for Liverpool's Adam Hammill and Jamaica international O'Neil Thompson and are talking to another unnamed player.
But Barnsley face a race with Leeds United to secure Hammill's services.
"[Leeds] have also agreed a fee, but we need to convince him that this is the place for him to further his career," Davey told BBC Radio Sheffield.
"We have agreed a package for O'Neil Thompson but we need to speak to his Norwegian club and complete the negotiations."
Davey is also interested in signing another midfielder who he is yet to name.
"There is A N Other who is coming in as well. He can play centrally or on the left," he added.
Meanwhile the Reds pursuit of Andy Gray continues, the Charlton striker has agreed terms to move to Oakwell, but cannot move back to South Yorkshire till the takeover of the League One side is completed.
