New signees score for P'More in Norway

    Thursday, August 06, 2009

Perennial Digicel Premier League powerhouse team Portmore United FC made a solid start to their tour of Norway by defeating First Division side Nybergsund IL-Trysil 3-1 at the Nybergsund Stadium in Nybergsund yesterday.

In what was an evenly-matched first half, last season's Premier League runners-up took the lead in the 27th minute on a goal by defender Tyrone Sawyers.

The home team equalised three minutes later on a dubiously awarded penalty which gave goalkeeper Sean Sawyers little chance as the teams went in at half-time locked at 1-1.

The second half saw a Portmore team obviously adjusted to its surroundings despite arriving some 12 hours late into Norway due to travel delays.

The St Catherine-based side made wholesale changes which saw the introduction of new signings Gary McIntosh and Damion Harwood, as well as Bryan Bayliss, Kemeel Wolfe and Adrian Reid.

Both Harwood and Macintosh, who were drafted into the Portmore lineup to bolster their flagging scoring touch, paid dividends immediately.

Harwood put Portmore 2-1 up in the 67th minute on a beautifully directed header from a precision cross supplied by Macintosh. Then, only eight minutes later, Macintosh put the finishing touches on an excellent five-man buildup by slotting home a hard-line drive that left the home side's goalkeeper able to do little more than simply admire the Jamaicans' flair.
Portmore completely dominated the final 30 minutes of the game. The introduction of Michael Binns, Kevin Deerr, Sheldon Battiste, Mario Swaby and Tremaine Stewart did little to provide the Norwegian hosts with any relief.

The fresh legs only served to heap constant pressure on a withering Nybergsund backline that was lucky not to have conceded at least another two goals.

Portmore continue their game schedule today against the much tougher Lillestrøm SK who play in the Norwegian Premier League.

Portmore United - Shawn Sawyers (Garice McPherson 76th), Tyrone Sawyers (Tremaine Stewart 76th), André Darby (Sheldon Battiste 59th), Rickardo Harriet (Adrian Reid 45th), Andre Campbell (Mario Swaby 67th), Cornelius Henry (Kevin Deerr 59th), Damion Williams (Michael Binns 57th), Stephen Morrissey (Kemeel Wolfe 45th), Ricardo Cousins (Bryan Bayliss 45th), Roland Dean (Gary McIntosh 45th), Roen Nelson (Damian Harwood 45th).

        Second match report

        Portmore FC beaten 1-0

        Published: Friday | August 7, 2009

Portmore United FC lost a hard-fought battle, 1-0, to five-time Norwegian premiership champions Lillestrom SK yesterday, as they continued their 10-day preseason tour of Norway.

Last year's Digicel Premier League runners-up seemed to be suffering from fatigue owing to a schedule that saw them having breakfast at 7 a.m. before travelling three hours by bus from their base in Trysil to Lillestrom, some 10 miles outside of Oslo, for a mid-day game.

Portmore seemed unsettled for most of the first half and this resulted in the home side going ahead in the 20th minute, after a powerful strike by Nigerian forward Edwin Eziyodawe was parried by goalkeeper Dwayne Kerr into the path of an onrushing Magnus Myklebust. The big Norwegian striker then made no mistake in burying the gift into the back of the net.
In what was a creditable recovery, Portmore began to press after going down by putting together long periods of possession. However, they were unable to mount any serious challenges to the Lillestrom defensive unit and they went into half-time with the scoreline unchanged.

        Substitutions
Portmore started the second half with an unchanged line-up but by the 60th minute made substitutions in the midfield and among the forwards in an attempt to get on the scoresheet.

The introduction of the likes of Cornelius Henry, Michael Binns, Damion Harwood, Ricardo Cousins and Tremaine Stewart breathed new life into the Portmore attack, which saw them getting several chances to score. Guest players, Rivoli's Devon Hodges, Tivoli's Roland Dean, Kemeel Wolfe and Harwood, in particular, could all have easily put the St Catherine-based side ahead. However, they were given a valuable lesson in professional application as the sturdy Lillestrom defensive unit calmly repelled their most promising advances.

Portmore continue their tour with several practice sessions over the next few days with a rest day on Sunday, before playing another Norwegian first division team next Wednesday. The team then returns home the following day.

Portmore opened their tour on Wednesday with a 3-1 win over first division side Nybergsund IL-Trysil.

Portmore United: Dwayne Kerr, Eric Vernan, Adrian Reid, Sheldon Battiste (André Darby 82'), Mario Swaby (Tremaine Stewart 75'), Damion Williams (Michael Binns 63'), Kevin Deerr (Ricardo Cousins 75'), Kemeel Wolfe (Tyrone Sawyers 58'), Bryan Bayliss (Cornelius Henry 60'), Devon Hodges (Damian Harwood 70'), Roland Dean (Gary McIntosh 70')

Lillestrom SK: Otto Fredrikson, Karim Essediri, Steinar Pedersen, Frode Kippe, Martin Siege, John Anders Bjorkoy, Khaled Mouelhi, Nosa Igiebor, Mathis Bolly, Magnus Myklebust, Edwin Eziyodawe.

          mmmm?
How do you see this report?
          Lousy first half...ineffective second?

Portmore end Norwegian tour with 2-1 win

Now, as a result of this tour, several players may be on their way to Norway. New is that Eric Vernan and Damion Willams may be signing for Nybergsund IL. Duwayne Kerr may be on trial (not sure which club) and Adrian Reed is on trial with Lillestrøm.

Portmore end Norwegian tour with 2-1 win
            Friday, August 14, 2009

Portmore United closed out their 11-day pre-season tour of Norway Wednesday with a workmanlike 2-1 victory over First Division side HamKam.
Portmore dominated play from start to finish against a HamKam side currently sitting sixth in the 16-team First Division that fielded a mix of mostly first-team players and some reserves.

It was Gary McIntosh who opened the scoring for Portmore in the 27th minute after a long period of possession that saw the St Catherine-based side stringing together no fewer than 20 passes. The end came with McIntosh providing a clinical finish that augurs well for a Portmore team desperately in need of a consistent goalscoring touch.

The rest of the first half saw Portmore playing possession football as head coach Linval Dixon seemed content to give his team, who were missing the services of Eric Vernan and Shawn Sawyers (on national team duties), as well as Damion Williams and Duwayne Kerr (Norwegian club trials), a chance to blend together one last time before returning home. The first half ended 1-0.

As has been customary throughout the tour, the second half saw Portmore making a host of changes. But it was the introduction of the wily veteran Roen Nelson which saw last season's Digicel Premier League runners-up putting the game away for good in the 70th minute.

In what was a dazzling solo effort, Nelson skillfully dispatched three defenders before calmly slotting the ball into the back of the net.
Having put the game away, Portmore made no fewer than nine changes as Dixon seemed intent on getting a good look at all his charges.

However, with only eight minutes to go and just after the ninth substitution was made, HamKam pulled one back on a brilliant strike by Håvard Sørli.
Among the standouts for Portmore were Michael Binns and Adrian Reid.
The team was scheduled to return home yesterday in time to host the inaugural Portmore United High School Football Tournament at Ferdie Neita Park slated for tomorrow.

The tournament features some of the top teams from the parishes of St Catherine and Clarendon, including Bridgeport High, Ascot High, Garvey Maceo High, Cumberland High, Glenmuir High, Clarendon College and Waterford High.

Tournament sponsors Burger King and a Locker Room Sports will be on hand to provide refreshment for the teams and officials as well as the awards. The teams compete for a $20,000 first prize and the Herman Ming Trophy.

Portmore United - Garice McPherson, Mario Swaby (Tramaine Stewart 81st), Adrian Reid (Ricardo Harriott 78th), Sheldon Battiste (Andre Darby 80th), Tyrone Sawyers (Andre Campbell 75th), Ricardo Cousins (Bryan Bayliss 70th), Michael Binns, Kevin Deerr (Cornelius Henry 77th), Kemeel Wolfe (Steven Morrissey 70th), Gary McIntosh (Roen Nelson 60th), Roland Dean (Damian Harwood 60th).
