  • Man Utd the richer after Asia tour

Manchester United left Asia early yesterday morning with a few million dollars in the bank, fans and sponsors happy and a manager confident he has the makings of a forward unit for next season.

After the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez, Alex Ferguson saw the Asia tour as a chance to see how best to deploy new signing Michael Owen and Federico Macheda, along with Wayne Rooney and Dimitar Berbatov.

Starting with a different strike partnership in each of the four matches in Malaysia, Korea and China, he was rewarded with 16 goals with all four forwards getting on the scoresheet.

    ‘We’re not too bad’
“I think it gives us very strong options,” Ferguson said after the 8-2 thrashing of Hangzhou Greentown that ended the tour. “Macheda’s development is good for a 17-year-old boy and he’s got the physical attributes to go with it. With the experience of Berbatov and Owen, and we all know the great expectations we have of Wayne Rooney, I think we’re not too bad.”

The manager’s praise for Macheda, the Italian teenager who burst into the spotlight last season with a goal against Aston Villa, is unusual in that the Scot tends not to talk up young players for fear of putting too much pressure on them.

After more than a decade at the top of the game, the 29-year-old Owen needs no such protection. The former Liverpool and Real Madrid striker shrugged off two difficult seasons at Newcastle with four goals in four games in Asia, double the strike rate Ferguson expects of him next season.

“I think his contribution and overall play of a game is definitely suited to us,” said Ferguson. “He’s very cool in the last third of the field. He knows when to run and when to hold his run .... he’ll get us goals.”

On Sunday, the England striker started alongside Berbatov and their interplay was encouraging, not least when they combined for Owen’s volleyed second goal. Berbatov scored three goals on the tour and Ferguson thought the coaching staff had also learned something about the mercurial Bulgarian.

    Tougher tests
“Last season was a strange one for him and we maybe didn’t use him in the right way, but we know exactly how to use him now, further up the pitch, playing as a centre forward,” the manager said.

Much tougher tests than Hangzhou lie ahead, of course, and the United squad move on to Germany this week for a tournament featuring Boca Juniors, AC Milan and Bayern Munich.

Nevertheless, Ferguson looked very pleased with what had been achieved in Asia at the cost of just a minor injury to Gary Neville.

Even Ryan Giggs gave a reminder that he is not a spent force on Sunday with his first hat-trick for United at the age of 35. The Welshman has seen big names come and go before in his many years at Old Trafford and is convinced the club will survive the departure of Ronaldo and Tevez. (Reuters)

Yesterday mi read a post from Xuberant bout Liverpool having a better youth system than Manu. Well, Manu have a Johnny Evans, a Darren Gibson, a Ben Foster, a Kiko, a Danny Wellbeck all knocking on the door. Others got impatient and went elsewhere, some couldn't mek the Empire army and have to move along.

You should realize by now that winning youth cup isn't priority, the youngsters are used in Fa Cup semis.

Nuff a unnu Manu fans a fret bout Manu, I have much more faith in Manu youngsters than most a unnu. Watch the youth them come trough. That Italian is going to shine right through.

There are some coaches who blood youngsters and they are Wenger, Fergie, Oniel, and Moyes. It is more about the coach than about anybody else. yeah Manu might lose a few game but al long as there is no runaway winner which is unlikely they will be in the thick of things.

Mr. President I find that hard to believe that Dr. Xcuse could make such a statement. If it's not too much of a trouble for you, could you please re-post that post?

Wait ... be specific. You see me a fret? I will admit the Owen signing was a surprise and I wasn't too pleased, but after reading and thinking about it, I think Fergie may have just won title #4 and give Capello another forward to go to SA2010.

Re-reading the post ... he said policy not system. But 5hit ... its still an out of this world comment.

"Whats wrong with buying players like Glen Johnson ? Arsenal didnt groom Addie through any youth system ! He cost $3 million .

All the top 4 have the same youth policy , buy young , buy cheap , buy the best .Arsenal and Liverpool seem to have the best policies so far as we all ways seem to meet in the youth cup final.

The difference between us and Arsenal is we hold onto our stars until a certain age.Rafa wont sell a player unless he is over 25 and wutliss.Arse sells regardless.

You still havent come to terms with the bizniz side of football , you think clubs can survive in the EPL developing youth and blooding them ? No sir not one , they risk relegation or your CL spot , its done with balance ask pool we have the youngest squad in the Prem behind Arsenal and we finished 2nd in the EPL last season this season we will take it.
