  • Would think this forum would be buzzing about MexTico/Panama

    What a friggin' game!!!

    Long story short;

    The main incident was The mexican coach clearly kicked at the knee of a panamanian player. The game was delayed for over 10 minutes.

    Such a pity most of the forum missed this one.

    Aguirre apologizes

    Mexico coach said he's sorry for his "improper behavior" during the game against Panama at the Gold Cup; in the end, he was sent off."I apologize to all the Mexican fans, the team, the press and all the people working for the national soccer team. I didn't act properly today," Javier Aguirre said during a press conference after drawing 1-1 against Panama at the CONCACAF Gold Cup.

    Mexico coach said the reason for the incident that took place at minute 80 was "a touch between him and myself as I wanted to catch a ball."

    "He was running by inertia, and I shouldn't have been in his way," Aguirre said.

    The coach admitted he feels "truly sorry" for having been out of the place where the coaching staff must stay, said El Salvador referee Joel Aguilar did the right thing.

    Being in contact with Panama's Ricardo Phillips made Aguirre feel himself hurt and answered back to such aggression; as a result, the player was sent off too. In the meantime, the game was suspended for 10 minutes.

    Aguirre said that despite the final result, "I'm glad for the team's performance and attitude. Yet, we still have a lot to improve, and fast."

        How can you send off a field player for reacting to physical contact from the opposing coach? This is a dangerous precedent as teams could use such tactics to goad opposing star players into red cards.

          You can for retaliation.

          And the coach got a red card, too.

              So Panama plays a man down because the Mexican coach abused one of their players? Rubbish it's not like di man punch down the coach. Demar Phillips chucked off a Costa Rican coach much mopre violently and didn't even get a talking to.

                I think it was a pretty soft red to give to the player, too.

                Just saying that it's not uncommon to see red cards given for for retaliating. Think about France 98. How violent was Beckham's retaliation foul on Simeone?

                  Yes but you miss the point. Football is not setup to where a coaches influence on the game while it is being played is negligible (aside from substitutions and halftime strategy). We could see coaches use this as a strategy to try and elicit a red card response from a player by striking them. I don't speak spanish and even the commentator siad it was a "reaccion natural" from the Panamanian player. You have no expectation of a coach kicking you while you do have that expectation with opponents on the field.
