Univision Kicks Off Gold Cup Coverage Today

Univision, TeleFutura, Galavision Services Joined by Fox Soccer Channel

By Mike Reynolds -- Multichannel News, July 3, 2009

CONCACAF Gold Cup 2009 kicks off today and Univision will have all the action.
The media giant, which holds exclusive Spanish-language rights in the States, will deploy all three of its networks, broadcasters Univision and TeleFutura and their cable cousin Galavision. They will be joined on July 4 by Fox Soccer Channel with coverage of the U.S. men's national team's opener with Grenada.

Established in 1991, the biennial Gold Cup has become the premiere event for FIFA's North America, Central America and Caribbean confederation.
The U.S., fresh off its final loss to Brazil in the Confederations Cup, is the defending Gold Cup champion. This year's 12-team field, divided into three groups, also includes rival Mexico, Canada, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guadeloupe, Haiti, Honduras, Jamaica, Nicaragua and Panama.

The competition begins Friday, July 3 with Group A meetings between Canada and Jamaica at 8 p.m. (ET) on Galavisión, followed by Costa Rica vs. El Salvador at 10 p.m. on TeleFutura.

The beat continues in Group B on Saturday, July 4 with Honduras vs. Haiti at 7 p.m. on Galavisión and the U.S. team taking on Grenada on TeleFutura at 9 p.m.

Group C puts it in play on Sunday, July 5, with Panama and Guadeloupe at 5 p.m., with coverage on Galavisión, followed by the Mexican national team's tournament debut against Nicaragua on Univision at 7 p.m..

As mentioned, Fox Soccer Channel, which holds English-language TV rights for the tourney, will also carry the U.S.-Grenada match on July 4 at 9 p.m. FSC also has the Yanks covered in Group B matches against Honduras on July 8 at 8:30 p.m. and July 11 vs. Haiti three days later at 6:30 p.m.

The network also will have quarterfinal action on July 18 or 19, as well as semifinals on July 23 and the final July 26 at 2:30 p.m.

Uniivision's three networks will carry every Gold Cup match (see the schedule below).

In addition, Univision, com, via keyword, Copa Oro, will look to engaging soccer enthusiasts. For the first time, fans can get live stats, play-by-play video highlights, and comprehensive previews and recaps of each match. Other content includes team profiles, player interviews and online voting for the best play of the day and best players. Moreover, fans can access Univision.com on their mobile phones for up-to-the-minute news and photo galleries.
