  • Another year and same dilemma, this time with memories.

At the beginning of December 2005, I made my most recent trip to Jamaica. I hurried from the airport to my friend's home to watch the final 15 minutes of Man U and Benfica. It was an agonizing 15 minutes. As I watched, I was on the phone with a friend who talked me though it and was very sympathetic. I believe even he could not believe the Neville mess up in the back. Neville was caught of position, ball watching as Evra did on Saturday.

Now it is another year, same stakes, the same two teams. But Livi is not here to talk through the last 15 minutes with me when Benfica and Man U play. I am sure he will be watching though. And because Liverpool is not involved, he will be on my side. He always said he had a fondness for Red & Black teams.

How come we stuck on 9 points? We've gone from a position of comfort to one of almost panic.

Karl.....I am calling Shady Pines right this instant. I am going to tell them to up your medicine because clearly senility setting in. I can't wait for the next time we play the Fraud Side. We will take out all of our frustrations on Fraudenal from minute 1 to minute 90 it will be a nightmare for your dibi dibi side. Wenger better easy himself because if he makes the mistake and pushes Sir Alex because he is upset at losing Sir Alex will damage him structure! - T.K.

<SPAN class=art-text>The last batch of group stage matches, due to take place on 5 and 6 December, is already promising to be extremely open. Eight clubs are still in the running for the final four qualifying places in the first four groups, as the fifth day of the Champions League group stage served up several exceedingly tight affairs on Tuesday. Only AC Milan and Glasgow Celtic emerged from these tussles clutching their tickets for the Round of 16.

Expectations were high ahead of the big match between Scottish and English giants Celtic and Manchester United in Group F, but for 80 minutes, neither side's fans had much to shout about. The two teams were effectively cancelling each other out, but the face of the game was suddenly transformed when a sumptuous free kick from Japanese international Shunsuke Nakamura found the net (80'). In the frenetic finale, the Mancunians looked to have salvaged a point when they were awarded a last-minute penalty, but Louis Saha's effort was turned away by Celtic keeper Artur Boruc and Celtic Park exploded with joy.

This result secures Celtic's place in the last sixteen, while Manchester United must wait for the final day. Alex Ferguson's boys will need to be wary of a Benfica side on a high after a comfortable 3-1 win over FC Copenhagen thanks to an early goal from Lourenco Leo and a brace from Fabrizio Miccoli.

In Group E, two teams who had already qualified, Lyon and Real Madrid, met at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium to contest top spot in the section. Despite being deprived of four first-team attackers (Fred, Karim Benzema, Sydney Govou and Sylvain Wiltord), the French champions began the game in impressive style, commanding the play and quite deservedly going ahead through an individual effort by John Carew. Florent Malouda then proceeded to double their advantage when he latched onto a Juninho free kick.

The Spaniards came back strongly before half time, when a powerful header from a corner by Mahamadou Diarra offered his old team-mates a costly reminder of his ability. After the break, and presumably after a blast of hot air from coach Fabio Capello, Madrid restored parity when Ruud van Nistelrooij diverted a Raul header into the French goal. But the Dutchman then blew his chance to be the hero of the evening by missing the penalty that would surely have settled the tie in the final minutes (2-2). The result means that Lyon finish top of the group.<TABLE id=IMGTAB height=150 cellSpacing=3 cellPadding=0 width=150 align=left summary="" border=0><TBODY><TR><TD></TD></TR><TR id=TRCAP><TD vAlign=bottom align=left><SPAN class=textblack11px_normal>Freddie Ljungberg was in fine form as Arsenal roared back to beat Hamburg. .</SPAN></TD></TR><TR id=TRSOURCE><TD align=left><SPAN class=textblack11px_bold>(AFP)</SPAN></TD></TR><TR id=TRAUTHOR><TD align=left><SPAN class=textblack11px_bold>CARL DE SOUZA</SPAN></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>Arsenal playing catch-up
