Sunil Gulati - Listen Bob, I have been thinking about this for some time and with two key tournaments upcoming and our US team struggling through quals, we need to take time to strategize on how we can maximize the attention of the fickle American public for a world cup tourney next year, our success and longevity is totally dependent on quals and performance in the the World Cup.
Bob Bradley - Damn Sunil, I have been thinking the same thing too, minimize our exposure in the short term, getting through quals is the number one objective and focus on getting the team ready for 2010 all else is really just window dressing.
Sunil - here is the direction I want us to think about, let's throw our eggs fully into the Confederation cup basket, it is a soft tournanment masquerading as a meaningful FIFA event, lots of news coverage as nothing else is going on, with the really good teams like Spain, Brazil and Italy treating it like a vacation and having fun like as if it were off season in Ibiza. We come in full strength or close to it and really give it a good whack, if we lose out we can say we played better teams, highly ranked better teams, if we win and perform above par, we look like Spartans conquering Persia, lots of press, hail the conquering lions of the northern prairies.
Bob - Interesting Sunil, it is a definite win, win! even if we lose. Now what do we do about the Gold Cup, that is going to be one tough tourney, the Ticos are playing like I have never seen them play, they have us by the cohones, I was still crying last night after the last whipping in San Jose, they really hurt us Sunil! Honduras is playing very well and you never know with Mexico at all and Jamaica well you know how they are, you just never know which team they will bring to the tournament ?? I am really afraid Sunil.
Sunil - There, there Bob, come now, display some of that stiff English upper lip you are always telling us about. Ok, this is the best part of my strategy, even though this is our regional tourney and we are the hosts, even though we are the straw stirring the Concacaf Mojito in every manner except on the field, and where in my warm heart I feel this should be the 2nd most important tourney for us after the WC, and we should be like the Euros and Africans, Asians and South Americans and how they think of their regional Cup. I feel it is our interest to field a weak team here, if we lose, we fielded a weak team, no biggie, we signaled to the press up front that we don't expect much from this, so no one is really paying any attention here in the US to this touney except the bloody foreigners. If we win and play well with what we say is our B team, then we are sitting really pretty,we don't expose our real team to potential whippings and embarassment here at home and lose the tournament at home in the year before the WC.
So talk about a real win win and we get our own selfish agenda to the fore.
Bob- Damn Sunil that is absolutely cold hearted, you sure you not from Kashmir.
Sunil - No man I am from Allahabad, the heart of Uttar, the heart of India and home of the Nagas, that is where I get all my knowledge man, we have been wise for more than 5000 years. But come to think of it the Nagas did originate in Kashmir so maybe you are right!! I am a chilled out dude who know how to play the game and get what we want while subjugating the most important tournament for Concacaf, yep, that's right!! All while I am president of the most important federation in making Concacaf a real player in world ball. Antartic cold amigo!
Bob - Hahaha I really like this plan, it is a win, win, win win even if we lose, lose! brilliant Sunil, brilliant!
Sunil- Ok Bob you wrote it all down, do you have it straight.
Bob - I got it Sunil.
Sunil - Good man, thank god I got rid of Bruce, he never could get the bigger picture always trying to compete and going stright from A to B without considering the public relations aspect to US ball, that is why I like you so much Bob you are so accomodating!!.
Sorry all I had to get that off my chest!
