Osasuna pulled off an unlikely escape as they condemned Real Madrid to their fifth consecutive defeat in a dramatic final day in the Primera Liga, with Real Betis suffering the drop at their expense.
Osasuna came from behind to beat second placed Real Madrid after Gonzalo Higuaín's opener threatened to end their top flight status.
The lead lasted just 3 minutes as Jaroslav Plasil levelled soon after and a 60th minute stunner from Francisco Juanfran completed the unlikely turnaround, as Osasuna moved up to finish 16th in the table.
Real Madrid also had Míchel Salgado and Klass Jan Huntelaar sent off in the second half as last season's champions finished this season in disgrace.
The result broke Real Betis' hearts as they could only manage a 1-1 draw with Valladolid at Estadio Manuel Ruiz de Lopera.
Marcos Sebastian Aguirre gave the away side the lead in first half injury time before Ricardo Oliveira levelled at the beginning of the second half.
The draw was not enough however with Osasuna and Sporting Gijon winning elsewhere.
Sporting Gijon also had to come from behind to win having fallen behind to a Recreativo Huelva opener through Ersen Martin.
David Barral got the home side back on terms on 58 minutes before a Luis Moran strike nine minutes later ensured Gijon beat the drop at the first attempt having been promoted last season.
Getafe ensured their safety with a 1-1 draw with Racing Santander at Estadio El Sardinero.
Toni Moral gave the home side a 34th minute lead, only for that advantage to be cancelled out four minutes later by Esteban Granero.
The draw means Getafe drop two places to finish 17th while Santander drop one place into 12th.
Sevilla secured a third place finish in La Liga after a late double condemned already relegated Numancia to a final day defeat.
An 88th minute strike from Emiliano Armenteros and an injury time own goal from Numancia midfielder Juan Carlos Moreno summed up the home side's season as they went down 2-0 at the Estadio Nuevo Los Pajaritos.
The result means no changes in position in the league table as Sevilla and Numancia remain in third and 19th place respectively.
Elsewhere, a hat-trick from veteran striker Raul Tamudo moved Espanyol into the top half of the table following their 3-0 win over Malaga.
Tamudo put his side two goals up by half time and completed his treble with a second half penalty after Malaga defender Robson Weligton saw red.
The defeat nonetheless means Malaga remain cemented in eighth position while Espanyol sneak into 10th position at the expense of Almeria.
