Are you for Real? United and Madrid 'put pen to paper' on £70m Ronaldo transfer

    By Sportsmail Reporter
Last updated at 4:16 PM on 12th May 2009

A respected Spanish newspaper claims Manchester United and Real Madrid have already signed contracts on a world-record deal to take Cristiano Ronaldo to the Bernabeu this summer.
Come and get me: Cristiano Ronaldo

It is claimed that the clubs have agreed a £71.5million fee for the 24-year-old, which is subject to secrecy clauses and Madrid's new president taking up the option.
Former president Ramon Calderon has long hinted that there was an agreement in principle and Sportsmail understands that Madrid officials have been confident for some time that they would finally land their man at the end of the season.
Sportsmail revealed last month that the LalLiga giants believed they had a deal in place and El Pais' reports have further supported that claim.
But now Spanish national newspaper El Pais claims to reveal details of actual contracts and clauses that have been pored over by the clubs and Ronaldo himself.
The total value of the deal would be in excess of 100m euros (£89m) when taking into account a big cut for Ronaldo's agent Jorge Mendes. The former Sporting Lisbon player could expect to pick up £12.5m a year - a whopping £240,000 a week.

Ronderful: The Manchester United star gets the better of City defender Micah Richards

The alleged contract states that United would have to accept a bid of £71.5m after July 1, provided that neither side divulges details before May 31. Whether apparent press leaks such as this scupper the deal remain to be seen.

The new Madrid president would have to accept the deal, too, and this is where El Pais sees a stumbling block to the agreement.
Florentino Perez, the man who ushered in the era of the Galacticos earlier in the decade, is expected to win elections on June 14 and return to the post he walked away from just over three years ago.
He is understood to be keen on Ronaldo but, despite sensational claims to the contrary, it is unlikely he could sanction a deal for both the United star and AC Milan playmaker Kaka.
Kaka is seen as a cheaper option who would free up cash for other targets, leaving Perez with a dilemma.
United have consistently said there is no secret deal in place and insist Ronaldo will go nowhere. The player has even brushed off reports in recent weeks.

Preferred option: Real Madrid presidential hopeful Florentino Perez may instead go for Kaka

But El Pais repeat claims that he only agreed to stay at Old Trafford last summer on the understanding that it would be his last season in England.
United's No 7 has already taken a patent on 'CR9', leading to speculation he will wear a new number at the Bernabeu.
Madrid legend Raul wears Ronaldo's current number, while it is suggested that Madrid officials want him to restore pride to the No 9 shirt currently worn by outcast Javier Saviola.
Just as Ronaldo followed in the footsteps of George Best, Bryan Robson and David Beckham, at Madrid he would be asked to emulate Alfredo di Stefano and Hugo Sanchez.
El Pais is not one of Spain's hyperbolic sports papers and their stories often carry gravitas.

Reports in Portuguese paper Record appear to support the claims by saying that Ronaldo has already accepted a deal. Record suggests Portugal defender Pepe could be part of a part-exchange agreement.

Wigan's Antonio Valencia in line to replace sulky United star

      By Chris Wheeler
Last updated at 3:14 AM on 12th May 2009
The hissy fit at Sir Alex Ferguson has raised suspicions that he could be plotting another attempt to leave Manchester United this summer, so perhaps it is appropriate that Wednesday night Cristiano Ronaldo will come face to face with the man earmarked to replace him.
A £20million deal has already been agreed in principle for Wigan's Antonio Valencia to join United should Ronaldo be granted his wish to play in Spain with Real Madrid.
Equally, Valencia could end up on the right wing at the Bernabeu and Real's technical director Miguel Angel Portugal will be an interested observer at the JJB Stadium on Wednesday to watch their two targets in the Barclays Premier League.

Incredible sulk: Real Madrid-target Ronaldo displays his disbelief after being substituted during the comfortable 2-0 win over Manchester City on Sunday

That is, of course, assuming Ferguson chooses not to punish Ronaldo's impudence by dropping him to the bench where he sat brooding for more than half an hour of Sunday's Manchester derby after taking spectacular offence to being substituted.

While Ferguson will not have been surprised by the timing or nature of Carlos Tevez's goal celebration, given his much publicised demands for a permanent move to Old Trafford, Ronaldo's reaction has caused some concern.
This, after all, is a player whose body language for most of the season indicated he wanted to be anywhere but Manchester, yet appeared to have rediscovered his good form and good humour in recent weeks.
Seeing him angrily swiping away a tracksuit top, shaking his head and muttering obscenities on the bench did little to calm fears that he is gearing up for another summer of discontent.
Most worrying of all for United fans is the possibility of losing both Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez at the end of the season.

Falling on deaf ears: Carlos Tevez and the Old Trafford crowd plea for the club to sign the on loan Argentine striker on a permanent basis

They are almost resigned to the fact that their support of Tevez and chants of 'Fergie, sign him up' have fallen on deaf ears. But if Ronaldo were to go as well, it would leave a significant gap to fill.
The Portugal winger provides the one real injection of pace for United. Tevez brings to the table a remarkable work ethic. Dimitar Berbatov has neither.

Ferguson has been down this route before, of course. He has jettisoned his most popular players, rebuilt his teams and confounded the critics who claimed he had got it wrong.
Ince, Beckham, Van Nistelrooy, Keane are just a few of the big names to discover they were not bigger than the club.
And the fact that he has lined up Valencia as a replacement is a sign that he will not be wrong-footed if Ronaldo is allowed to leave.

The deal would see Wigan take striker Fraizer Campbell in part-exchange and United acquire a winger who is very different to what they have at the moment.
Wing man: Wigan star Antonio Valencia is thought to be Ronaldo's likely successor should the Portuguese winger leave Old Trafford

While Valencia, 23, might not be able to match Ronaldo for fancy tricks and stepovers, his strength and durability are that of a young man who left home at the age of 16 and signed up for a military lifestyle with Club Deportivo El Nacional, a club run by the Ecuadorean army.
He is a no-nonsense, old-fashioned winger far removed from the kind of histrionics that led even Ferguson to warn Ronaldo last month that he should learn to expect some rough treatment every now and then.
Valencia also has the advantage of being established in the Barclays Premier League, unlike the other names on United's list of top midfielders and attackers from around Europe, like Karim Benzema, Kaka, Franck Ribery, Samuel Eto'o and David Silva.
Ferguson, who is watching Newcastle's Slovenian teenager Harris Vuckic with interest, can also point to the emergence of youngsters Federico Macheda and Danny Welbeck this season, as well as the prospect of Serbian duo Zoran Tosic and Adem Ljajic coming into first-team contention in the near future.

      VALENCIA vs RONALDO

This season’s stats show that Ronaldo is far more effective than his potential replacement going forward, even though Valencia is better at getting his hands dirty.

Whether Tevez has a future at Old Trafford is another matter entirely. United's reluctance to offer him a long-term deal when his two-year loan expires next month does not bode well, but support for the Argentine is not just confined to the stands.
After seeing Tevez score a superb goal to clinch victory over Manchester City on Sunday and nudge United nearer a hat-trick of Premier titles, goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar said: 'Carlos works his socks off and he's a very popular player in the dressing room. The rest is up to the people upstairs.'

So, what happens next to Manchester United striker Tevez?

        By Sportsmail Reporter
Last updated at 9:26 AM on 12th May 2009

Just remind us, who owns Carlos Tevez?
A group of investors, with Kia Joorabchian as their trusted front man.
He spots the talents, mainly in South America, advises on value, makes the deals and negotiates the sell-ons to clubs. He’s the ringmaster and has a very close relationship with Tevez and his family.

How much is the player worth?
The asking price is anything upwards of £25million. There is a credit crunch, you know.
        Out of Old Trafford? Tevez

        Who gets the money?
Joorabchian and his investors share the profit. They originally signed Tevez from Argentinian side Boca Juniors, for around £12m. Since then, he has won a host of South American trophies (three times South American Footballer of the Year), an Olympic gold, a Champions League and a Premier League title, among other trophies. He is on course to become the most decorated Argentinian footballer of all time.
        Worth it then?
Not if you’re Manchester United, it seems. But there are lots of others ready to break the bank. The bidding starts soon.
        Such as?
Liverpool and Manchester City lead the way. Everton and Spurs can dream and Joorabchian flew from the Manchester derby to Milan versus Juventus at the weekend.
Milan like the look of Tevez the terrier, but he wants to stay in England. With the right club.

        How about another loan?
It’s not allowed. The Premier League have changed their rules and third-party ownership is outlawed. So that rules out United negotiating a fresh short-term deal. Or anyone else.

        What about his wages?
The going rate. Around £100,000 a week should do the trick and a four-year deal is the most likely outcome. For that, you get a ready-made all-action hero.
        When does all this happen?
His deal with United runs out in June. He has been free to negotiate with other clubs since January, but has said he wanted to concentrate on reaching the end of the season. Now, let battle commence.

I read in another report about Paul Scholes who in his heydays was rank as one of the best midfielders in the world, that in all his time with the Empire, Fergie has never received an offer from another club for him. When asked why, Fergie said that the other clubs knew that they would be wasting their time because players like Scholes, Giggs and others would never leave the Empire. Carlitos practically begging to stay with the Empire. Any other club is a step down with no guarantee of a trophy.

Agreed, but his handlers need to come with a better asking price.

AC Milan are lining up a £40million bid to land Carlos Tevez, according to the Daily Star. However The Sun claims the Argentinian has admitted he will play for Liverpool should an offer be made ('Tev: I'll play for Kop').
