MONTEGO BAY, St James - Citing failures on his part, Orville Powell has stepped down as president of the St James Football Association and chairman of the Jamaica Football Federation's (JFF's) Western Confederation, with immediate effect.
POWELL... cites failure to unite factions in St James and Western Confederation
Powell, who spoke to the Observer yesterday, confirmed the reports, saying he stepped down on Monday and notified both bodies of his decision.
Bruce Gaynor, general secretary of the St James FA and second vice-president of the JFF, said the announcement was a "terrible blow to the FA as Mr Powell has been a stable, solid leader".
Gaynor said it came as a surprise as he had just returned from a one-week trip with Powell to the Czech Republic and the latter gave no indication he was about to step down.
