Bayern Munich have confirmed the sacking of coach Jurgen Klinsmann following Saturday's defeat by Schalke.
Klinsmann has been under pressure at the Allianz Arena for several weeks following a disappointing run of form since the winter break.
The Bavarian giants were knocked out of the UEFA Champions League by Barcelona in the quarter-finals and lie third in the Bundesliga table.
A 1-0 home defeat by Schalke on Saturday left the reigning champions in third spot, three points behind leaders Wolfsburg.
That setback prompted fresh speculation about Klinsmann's future and Bayern confirmed the former Germany coach's dismissal on Monday morning.
Difficult decision
Klinsmann only took charge of the club last summer, but lost seven of his 29 Bundesliga matches at the helm, including five of the 12 games played since the turn of the year.
Club chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said: "It was a difficult decision, but the results from the last weeks, the way they came about and especially the situation five rounds before the end of the season forced us to act due to due our responsibility towards the club.
"With Jupp Heynckes and (assistant) Hermann Gerland we have two experienced coaches, to whom we have handed the management of the team until the end of the season."
Bayern have placed former coach Jupp Heynckes in caretaker charge until the end of the season and he will preside over training from Tuesday morning.
Ex-Germany international Heynckes was Bayern boss between 1987 and 1991, and won two Bundesliga titles during his time in charge.
