John Barnes on PFA Award: ‘Gerrard is the Deserved Winner’ Not the United 5!
My vote for PFA Player of the Year would have to go to Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard. In a season where few players have stood out individually, Stevie most certainly has. All the other candidates from Manchester United are great players in their own right but haven’t performed to the same high standard that the Liverpool man has over the course of the season.
Rio Ferdinand has missed a number of games through injury whilst Ryan Giggs however impressive he has been this season has only started a handful of Premier League games. If the award is judged on this season alone, then there is no-one who has performed as well as Gerrard.
Stevie has shown not only great quality but also consistency whether he has played just behind the main striker or in the centre of midfield. He has a bit of everything to his game and has demonstrated this week in, week out this season and should be the deserved winner.
