  • MLS and Draft picks

I just realise that the MLS teams have cut their reserve teams.
I found it strange how so many draft plyaers were cut and now I found the answer out.

Cutting the reserve team has made it harder for draft pick to come to the forefront. J guess now the MLS teams will have no choice but to buy more A League players and others now.

So all who talking about talent, well the MLS is doing less development these days. Many players including Altidore and Ralph were reserve players for a while.

As have already said, MLS has stopped wasting time with overage players with limted potetial and have focused on DEVELOPMENT.

The Reserve team never helped Damani. He forced his way into the team in no time and took the role Nate Jacqua was supposed to have.

Without the reserve team the roster is less.

You think most drafted player getting 10,000 a year go straight into first team?

How are they focus on developement when they cut the second team and less roster spot?

      "

Senior rosters expanded, reserve division eliminated
On the surface, and with expansion looming, getting rid of up to six developmental players per team looks shortsighted. Garber argued it's necessary, that putting some of the millions spent on maintaining a flawed reserve system into improving first teams is the proper priority during a financial downturn.
Truth is, it's hard not to agree. The last four members of the current 28-man rosters typically don't get much, if any, first-team action. And while the move might mean fewer Danny Cepero-like stories in the future, if the money saved means a team like New England can afford to retain a World Cup vet like Avery John (who signed with a USL team for more money), it's justified."

They are focused on DEVELOPMENT not keeping marginal players on board. Now they are keeping the draft picks whO can make an impact and focusing on YOUTH DEVELOPMENT. not OLD MAN DEVELOPMENT.

Yet New England has relied on two rookies while coping with injuries in the early going. Kevin Alston, the No. 10 pick overall, was a Generation Adidas player out of Indiana. Darrius Barnes, a third-rounder from Duke and the sixth player the Revolution chose in the draft, beat the odds to get a roster spot and then start.

"Me and Kevin did well throughout the preseason, just found where the team had a need, and we were able to contribute right away," Barnes says.

It depends on how you look on development.
Most of the draft players have some talent. Some with extended playing time in the right environment will make it.

The league is more concerned about cost cutting and survival right now.

Yes cost is always a concern for the league, that is why DC United may have to move.

However, throwing money at 23+ players makes no sense and is not development.

What they are doing now is development. You get college players who can contribute and then focus on Developing young talent.

Most draft players are not that good.

              I beg to disagree.

I think it wise cost cutting measure but nog good for development.

Thefact is many of the college players need a little adjustment time which may not reflect on their skill level. At least 50% can hack it in the MLS. At least 5 or six will become US international from each group. Check the MLS and see how many college player is in it currently.

The ones who will become US International will make the team's roster.

First round, majority can become a starter or important sub.
Second round, half with the potential to become starters or impotant subs while the rest add no value
third and fourth, A couple who can make a roster and the rest there to carry bags for the summer

Now them focus on real development and not patchwork.

So real development in your book is only for top players? Are you kidding me?
You know how many talent has been bypassed and get another chance and do it? The MLS don't offer the second chance that many has gotten anymore.

How much talent has been bypassed? Would love to hear about it.

The majority of players who can add VALUE will make their rosters. The players who are solid, but not ready can go to the A-League and prove themself.

Development doesn't take place with them, it is with the YOUTH. The MAJORITY of the college draft picks do not provide any great value to the MLS.

you think there is a reason why European clubs have second teams or is just a waste of money?

Normally a few break into the first team but when you can get a Johnny Evans, A Wayne Rooney, Abanogahor through the ranks it is well worth it. Same thing with the MLS blooding Maurice Edu, Altidore and others. Right now the White Caps have one of the best youth system in North America. Now they are going to join the MLS it will be interesting to see what they will be doing, if they will abondon their youths system in favor of your DEVELOPMENT.

Did I say to Abandon their YOUTH team? Youth team and 23yr + squad is two different thing. Look like them smart and throwing the overage matter out the window.

well the second team was also a way of blooding some youths. These clubs don't have youth teams.

They are headed in the direction of developing their youth acadamies and leaving behind this model of taking overage players who are 95% complete.
