National Premier League coaches and former national representatives Paul Young and Chris Dawes have been selected to attend the FA International Course (Intermediate License) from April 15th -25th 2009 in Trinidad.
The course is being put on by the Football Association in partnership with CONCACAF and is aimed at instructing coaches on how to teach and coach principles of Association Football, focusing on the practical and theoretical syllabuses from the FA’s Level Two and Level Three courses. Material to be covered under the level Two practical include: (I) Technical Practices, (II) Skill Practices and (III) Game Related Practices. Level Three practical areas include: (I) Functional Practices, (II) Small Sided Games (up to 8v8) and (III) Phases of Play.
On the theoretical side the candidates will be instructed on (I) Coaching Principles and Roles, (II) Coaching Styles/Methods and Learning, (III) Introduction to the FA’s Long Term Player Development Model, (IV) Match and Player Analysis, (V) Planning, Preparing, Conducting and Evaluating Coaching Sessions, (VI) Football Fitness, Nutrition, Mental Preparation for Football and Planning a Football Coaching Programme. Following instruction, the candidates will be assessed against the set standards and criteria of the qualification.
As a prerequisite for being involved in this course, candidates must have undergone some formal Coach Education through their own Association or another national body and should be currently working with teams or team at a high standard. Coaches will either achieve the Intermediate or License qualification depending on then ongoing assessment procedure.
Candidates who successfully obtain the License Award will receive an action plan from the tutors, which may include recommendation for the ‘A’ License Course.
The presenters at the Workshop will be Chris Whalley and John Gittens. Whalley works full time for the Football Association as The Regional Coach Development Manager for the South East of England. He holds the UEFA ‘A’ Coaching License and the FA’s Diploma in Coach Education and is one of the top 35 ‘A’ License Coach Educators in England.
Gittens is currently the lead tutor at the Hampshire Football Association. He is a UEFA ‘A’ licensed coach and a licensed Coach Educator who has been working in this field for the past eight years. Gittens recently completed a Degree in Coach and Athlete Development. He had a successful 15-year professional playing career, representing teams such as Portsmouth, Middlesbrough FC and Southampton.
