  • Fergie's scared of us, roars Rafa

Rafael Benitez has accused Sir Alex Ferguson of being scared of his Liverpool side and talking "too much" about other teams.

The Anfield chief, despite having the Champions League showdown with Chelsea on Wednesday as his immediate objective, could not resist another swipe at the Manchester United chief as the Premier League race reaches boiling point.

Benitez was responding to claims from Ferguson that the loser of the Liverpool-Chelsea quarter-final will then be United's biggest challenger for the title because they will only have one competition to contend with.

Benitez will have skipper Steven Gerrard fit following a minor groin problem and Sami Hyypia (knee) and Yossi Benayoun (hamstring) available for the first leg with Chelsea.

But the fierce battle with United for the domestic title is clearly Benitez's driving inspiration.

He said of Ferguson's claims: "It is not mind games, I think it maybe is that he is a little bit scared (of us)."

Liverpool took over at the top of the table on Saturday evening with a late winner by Benayoun at Fulham.

But less than 24 hours later, United produced a stunning comeback victory over Aston Villa with the decisive goal coming in the fourth minute of injury-time from 17-year-old Federico Macheda.

That grabbed the initiative back for the Old Trafford club, but Benitez has come out fighting.

He said: "I do not have a problem with United. Clearly one of us, either Chelsea or us, will end up focusing just on the Premier League after this.

"I think Sir Alex will be supporting Liverpool in this tie because he knows we are the bigger threat now.

"If we continue in the Champions League maybe he will think we are tired. If we are not in this competition then he knows that we will be a (bigger) threat in the Premier League.

"If Chelsea are not in the competition, then he knows they will then be a threat also in the league. But he will lose anyway, whoever goes out, because they will still be a big threat to United.

"You have to prepare well for every single Premier League game, it is tough (to be in the Champions League as well). So he will clearly be supporting us tomorrow and next week.

"I would like to be worried about both competitions, it means we will continue to be successful.

"We just concentrate on our team, while he likes to talk too much about other teams."

Benitez claims he was unmoved by United's late heroics against Villa, saying: "We knew there would be situations like this, with us one point ahead, or one point behind. And everyone knows five minutes (of injury time) at Old Trafford is a very long time.

"I watched the game, but once United scored their second you felt they would win the game.

"He (Ferguson) is in the driving seat now and in a better position, but there is still a long way to go and we have confidence. We are pushing them and we will push them until the end."

But before Liverpool can lock horns again with United, they must face a Chelsea side who knocked them out of this competition in the semi-finals last season.

A John Arne Riise own goal in the first-leg at Anfield ultimately put Liverpool out, Chelsea winning 4-3 on aggregate after the Stamford Bridge second game.

Benitez said: "It is not a good time for either of us to be playing the other. It is a big challenge for both teams. They have a good team with experience and a manager with experience. This game is 50-50.

"I have great respect for a massive club and a very good team. We are both playing in big competitions. We are both big teams.

"We have beaten them twice this season in the league, it will give us confidence, but this is a different competition and it will be down to just one or two mistakes.

"Keeping a clean sheet is important in the first game for both teams, I would prefer to play at Anfield second, but that is not the case so we must get on with it."

Is the "roar" your headline or the articles?

Seems like reporters are trying to create news; I can hardly see Rafa "roaring".

When I saw the article I was going to say Rafa is going crazy again. However, when I read it I noticed the title did not match the article. These are irresponsible journalists. They mislead and are sensationalizing like the National Enquirer.....these reporters for the BBC!

Rafael Benítez plans for Chelsea but keeps ‘scared’ Sir Alex Ferguson in his line of fire

Rafael Benitez accused his Manchester United counterpart of 'talking too much'

A Champions League tie against Chelsea used to be enough to focus Rafael Benítez’s mind, but as he finds himself overseeing a push for the Barclays Premier League title as well as the European crown, it seems that the Liverpool manager is intent on thinking a few steps ahead.
The second half of the season has been characterised by verbal jousting between Benítez and Sir Alex Ferguson, but while the Manchester United manager appeared to have got the better of the Spaniard at the turn of the year as Liverpool floundered, Benítez spoke yesterday like a man who believes that those roles have been reversed.
Ferguson had suggested after United’s last-gasp 3-2 victory at home to Aston Villa on Sunday that the winner of the Champions League quarter-final between Liverpool and Chelsea would represent the biggest obstacle to his team retaining their domestic title. According to Benítez it was a pointed dig at Liverpool, one intended to pile pressure on the Merseyside club, but equally one that he did not appear to mind.

In the Liverpool manager’s eyes, unprovoked barbs are the surest sign that an opposition manager is running scared, just as he thought José Mourinho was when the former Chelsea manager casually tossed verbal hand grenades at him during the second of their Champions League semi-final ties, in 2007.
On that occasion, Benítez came out on top, arguing that cheap talk from the Portuguese merely played into his hands, and as he prepares for the first leg of Liverpool’s tie against Chelsea tonight, the Champions League is clearly not the only competition in which the Spaniard believes his team can prevail this season. Victory against Villa may have moved United back to the top of the table with a game in hand on Liverpool, but Benítez appears unfazed.
“We have to concentrate on our team, but he [Ferguson] likes to talk too much about other teams,” Benítez said. “It is not mind games, but maybe he is a little bit scared. He was talking about Liverpool and Chelsea after the [Villa] game, so I was just trying to clarify that if Chelsea are not in the Champions League or Liverpool are not in the Champions League in the next round, it means that one of us can concentrate on the league. They [United] will have a problem with that. It will be worse for United.
“He [Ferguson] will be supporting Liverpool because we are the biggest threat now. If we continue in the Champions League, we may be tired, but if we are not in it, he knows we will be a threat. I think we have enough quality to go all the way in both competitions.”
The absence of Javier Mascherano, who is suspended, will be a blow given that the Argentina midfield player has discovered his best form in recent weeks, but Benítez was the picture of confidence yesterday.
Having beaten United 4-1 last month in part by instructing Fernando Torres to target Nemanja Vidic, it seems inevitable that Benítez will employ a similar tactic against John Terry, especially given that the Chelsea captain will miss the second leg at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday if he is booked, although Benítez attempted to play down such suggestions.
“Yes, Terry is on a booking, but we won’t worry about this,” Benítez said. “I think he has enough experience so we will try to play our game and if we can push Terry or any other defender it will be good.”
Terry, though, is convinced that Chelsea will not be cowed by Liverpool’s twelfth man as they bid to repeat the heroics of last year and dump the Merseyside club out for the second successive season.
Liverpool’s supporters played a huge role in helping their team to eliminate Chelsea at the semi-final stage in 2005 and 2007. But having finally broken the stranglehold their rivals seemed to hold over them in this competition when they met in the last four for the third time, Terry is confident that Chelsea have learnt to live with the intensity of the Anfield cauldron.
“That hoodoo we broke last year, we got that out of the way because we’d had so many bad moments before against Liverpool,” the Chelsea captain said. “Their fans will play a big part, but we’ve learnt to deal with that. Coming up against them in the biggest stages of the competition, it was intimidating the first few times. But now we know what to expect and we know how to do the business.”
Their quest for goals will be boosted by Didier Drogba’s recovery from an ankle injury, but José Bosingwa, the full back, is out with a hamstring problem.
