Known as DOGSO to any referee — the Denial of an Obvious Goal-Scoring Opportunity — it is a well-defined law which leaves referees with no alternative but to show a red card if the answer is ‘yes’ to the following questions:
Was the attacker in control or likely to control the ball?
Was he heading towards goal?
Was he prevented from continuing by a foul?
Did that foul take away an obvious goalscoring opportunity?
In the Brad Friedel case — when he collided with Fernando Torres — the answers are all Yes and, in overturning the referee’s decision, the FA disciplinary panel have left everyone confused.
