LLANDILO, Westmoreland — A Westmoreland FA Captain’s Bakery football match was blown off on Monday after a player allegedly spat on the referee and the ensuing melee resulted in a 10-minute hold-up.
The accused player, Dwayne Kerr of Straths, could face criminal charges.
Straths FC and Westmoreland Police Youth Club (WPYC) were tied 1-1 in the 82nd minute in the third-round encounter when Kerr allegedly spat on referee Allie McKenzie and was promptly shown the red card.
On his way off the field, it is understood that uniformed policemen assigned to the game made comments to Kerr who allegedly responded with a barrage of expletives and threw bottles in their direction.
A melee ensued and the game was held up for about 10 minutes, after which it was called off.
Meanwhile, president of the WFA, Everton Tomlinson, has come out strongly against the incident and said he wants it to be dealt with to the fullest extent of the law to send “a strong message that this reprehensible behaviour will not be tolerated”.
Tomlinson said he was at the game but left before the incident occurred. However, he returned when he heard about the incident and offered to take the official to the police station to make a report.
“We want to deal with this incident with the seriousness... it deserves. This player brought the game into disrepute and crossed the line and we need to send a strong message,” Tomlinson said, adding that the association will wait for the courts to take action before making a decision on the issue.
Tomlinson said he understands the police have prepared a warrant for Kerr’s arrest.
The WFA boss said some other players from the Straths team were also upset as the player involved did not reside in their community and they did not want their team to be associated with this kind of behaviour.
League director Devon Maxwell said the Competitions Committee is to meet soon to take a decision.
Meanwile, Ockeve Jackson gave Straths the lead in the 31st minute, while Yhance Clarke responded for WPYC.
Also, Savannah FC became the third team to qualify for the semi-final after blanking Roaring River, 3-0, at Truro.
The victory carried Savanah to 30 points and a place in the top four as Paul Island (27 points) and Petersfield (29 points), the other two teams with a chance of advancing, will meet tomorrow.
In another game, leaders Russia FC increased their margin at the top after beating Grotto 3-0 to move to 37 points, six more than Poolside the other semi-final qualifier.
