Yes he took evasive action AFTER realizing Torres would beat him to the ball. If we both are running towards a fifty fifty ball, I beat you to the ball and flick it past you and my momentum carries me into you after I flick it past you then you will be called for a foul and rightly so

Friedel was not running towards a ball!

If I am stationary on the field and the ball runs towards me and you get to it before it arrives at my position and you after playing the ball run into me...you have committed a foul on me.

Refs have to assume that you have the ability to reach a ball and not wishing to harm yourself by running into man or any other obstacle...or wishing to harm a fellow player....i.e. refs have to believe that players are capable of making an informed opinion on associated risks that a possible collusion would incur.

If I push the ball through your legs and you stand up making no attempt to turn around and get the ball and I run into you that is a clear foul on your part. You were not making an attempt to win the ball and you blocked me from doing so. You cannot block someone from the ball if you aren't making an attempt to retrieve it yourself.

It is not a foul!
Pushing the ball through a player's legs demands you not run through the player. At all times players are not supposed to run through opponents or even players on the same team. It is a penal offence if deliberately done.

Do it deliberately to your own teammate and the ref rules it thus you are supposed to be...you shall be punished.

Yup! We see ref's making that wrong call too often...but it is wrong!
Not everything you see called, is called correctly!
